Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering32 crashes

The car suddenly jerks or pulls to the right at highway speed. Reports place it in the 40-70 mph range. A low humming or oscillating sound from the front right wheel well comes first. Two of the 3 complaints describe this pull sending the car into the side of a semi truck, and one person was injured. Dealers blamed an aftermarket exhaust or would not inspect the car, so no cause is confirmed. A separate complaint says vents under the front bumper shield catch on parking stops, which can tear the shield loose.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

Most of these complaints are about a recall, not a breakdown. E450 owners got notices for recall 23V445000, but dealers had no parts to do the repair. Those owners reported no failure. One E350 complaint describes a real one: the car slowed down while the accelerator was pressed, and a warning light came on. The dealer diagnosed a failed fuel pump. After the pump was replaced, the owner found a fuel smell and a puddle of fuel under the car.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Automatic emergency braking engages with nothing ahead. In one case it stopped the car at full force over a tree's shadow, with a child on board. Other reports describe a loud pop from the engine compartment followed by a total loss of power. The car then restarted while coasting. Smaller faults include an Automatic Headlamp Mode Inoperative warning that turns on and off, and a backup camera screen that stays blank in reverse.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The engine loses power suddenly, sometimes at freeway speed. One pattern involves the 2.0 Liter turbo engines (M260 or M264). Premature wear at the cylinder head valve seats causes misfires, and a manufacturer service bulletin addresses it. The other pattern starts with a 48 voltage battery malfunction warning. A red light follows, then the car decelerates, leaving about 30 seconds to pull over. Dealers attributed that failure to software that needed an update, and it happened twice within a year to one owner.
