Which S60 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Volvo S60. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2022 Volvo S60 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A S60 that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Volvo S60, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical3No crashes

The car shuts itself off while driving on highways at speeds up to 70 mph, with warnings that the vehicle is powering down or should be placed in park. Some cars also refuse to turn off. A dealer traced one case to a faulty mid voltage battery module and replaced it. The center display goes blank at random, sometimes with a loud squeal from the audio system. Climate control, defog, and the turn signal sound stop with it until the screen recovers or the car is restarted. The tire pressure monitor also sends false low-pressure alerts when the tires are correctly inflated.

  • Steering2No crashes

Low-profile 235/40R19 tires and rims take damage from potholes. One report describes 4 tires replaced in the first 11,000 miles, though that complaint refers to a 2021 car. The other filing lists power steering, brakes, battery, and driver-assist systems without describing any symptom. Neither report shows the steering itself failing. Tire and rim damage on rough roads is still a real running cost to plan for.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Power cuts out suddenly. The car can drop into a reduced-power mode, showing a turtle icon and check engine light and limiting itself to 25 mph, which leaves it exposed to rear-end crashes on faster roads. One case came right after a 40k service. A second pattern is intermittent: after reversing and shifting into B, the car does not move, then slams into gear and launches hard as more throttle is applied. A dealer found no diagnostic codes, confirmed current software, and could not fix it.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The car stops abruptly or refuses to move. While reversing in hybrid mode, it can halt with the check engine light and other warnings on, then ignore both D and R until the ignition is cycled. Stored codes point to lost communication with the battery energy control module and the starter generator control module. Other reports describe poor shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear, repeated check engine lights, an engine-bay part replaced twice, and false forward collision warnings that trigger braking with no car close by.

Fuel system
Car is just back from the dealer for 40k service 2 days ago, while driving about 35mph a turtle icon and a check engine light came on car rate limited itself to 25mph had I been on a faster road I would’ve likely been rear ended
