Which CLA is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | 4WD, FWD | 27–28 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CLA that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical132 crashes
Engine-compartment fires are the most serious reports here. One car burned at a stop light with under 15,000 miles, and another caught fire minutes after a remote start from the app. Other reports describe rear camera blackouts, an Active Brake Assist warning that won't clear, a power trunk lid closing on someone's head, and a no-start that a dealer blamed on transmission software. Many filings are recall notices where dealers had no parts or didn't know about an over-the-air fix.
Transmission121 crash
The transmission drops into neutral without warning. It happens while driving or when pulling away from a light, and the engine revs while the car won't move until it is shifted to park or restarted. Dealers often find no codes. In one case a replacement transmission failed the same way. Engine-related reports include misfires from a worn exhaust valve seat that needed a new cylinder head, camshaft actuator faults that kept a car under 30 mph, oil-soaked wiring harnesses near 50,000 miles, and start/stop failing to restart.
Engine10No crashes
Exhaust valves in the cylinder head wear early. That causes misfires and lost power, and repair quotes run as high as $12,000 before 60,000 miles. One engine failed completely after a head replacement. An oil pump control valve fault (P06DA00) shows up around 27,000 to 29,100 miles, with estimates over $7,000. Owners also describe stalling on the highway with no warning lights, sudden limp mode, leaking fuel injectors, and an engine fire in a parked car at 18,000 miles.
Backup camera82 crashes
The rearview camera freezes or goes black while reversing. Sometimes it shows an image for about 10 seconds first. Two reports describe backing into another vehicle after the image failed. Failures cluster between 34,000 and 48,000 miles, and one owner says the problem came back after a software update. Several filings describe recall notices with parts not yet available, or dealers saying the owner's VIN was not included.
Steering61 crash
One report describes the steering locking at speed on a turnpike, followed by a crash with two injuries. Other owners describe grinding or popping noises when turning, worse when the car is cold, and steering that resists or responds late without any warning light. One owner reports front tires wearing on the inner shoulder within 5k to 9k miles. Another describes start/stop failing to restart. One filing concerns recall repairs delayed by parts shortages.
Body and structure5No crashes
The glass roof panel between the windshield and sunroof comes loose. Owners describe it peeling, rattling, or flying off the car while driving, with no warning beforehand. Separately, the panoramic sunroof shatters with a loud pop and showers the cabin with glass. Door hinge detents also fail, so heavy front doors swing shut on legs and feet. In one case a replacement hinge failed again within a month, and one injury is reported.
Airbags41 crash
Few reports, and they vary. One describes a loud bang from the driver's windshield pillar, where an airbag sits, leaving the trim loose and the driver with lasting tinnitus. Another describes an airbag fault found after purchase that the dealer did not fix and wanted to charge for. One owner says a recall airbag replacement has not been done, and one crash with an injury gives no detail.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
The panoramic sunroof shatters at highway speeds of about 55 to 60 mph. Owners describe a loud noise and glass falling into the cabin, and one case caused minor injuries to occupants and a pet. Reported failures fall between 34,000 and 48,000 miles. Dealers quote replacement, and the manufacturer offered no help in the cases described. One owner reports a sunroof that will not close.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints CLA owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The rear camera is experiencing failure. It blacks out when reversing and I'm unable to see my surroundings. There is an active recall for my vehicle year, make and model, but for some reason my VIN isn't listed as active? The dealership has acknowledged that my vehicles issues are the same as the recall issues. Could you please assist with getting my vin added to the recall list. Thank you

Car stops accelerating and shifts into neutral without warning I nearly got hit from behind. I have consulted several other Mercedes vehicle owners and all had the same issue. Two of the other owners stated that this happened on the interstate and was very lucky they were not involved in a collision. Both vehicles were GLC 300. Mercedes does not seem to have an answer to the issue and all previous owners traded vehicles for fear of dying.

CEL with multiple cylinder misfires. Oil leak on top side of engine bank 2 in valley of injectors. Multiple codes for turbo charger faults and also clogged catalytic converters. Dealer confirmed and manufacturer denied federal emissions warranty on vehicle. Due to a modification that plays no role in the power train.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2022
The drivetrain/shaft is causing rumbling in the vehicle when accelerating and decelerating, typically around highway speeds. after more investigation the parts used on the a220 were also used on the gle350 that were recalled for having the same issues however the a220 wasn’t recalled for those issues.

On October 2, 2021, car caught fire in the engine compartment while car was turned off under carport of home. Car mileage was 18,000. The car was serviced by Mercedes of Marin and driven approximately 25 miles after the service when incident occurred. No warning lamps or messages appeared. Fire damage to carport and garage of house and fence and gate. Allstate, the insurance carrier is performing a fire inspection of the vehicle.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2021
While driving on the highway the engine shut down and I needed to pull over and restart the car. The engine would restart but then stalled several more times while driving. No check engine lights were on before the vehicle stalled and upon restarting the car no check engine lights turned on. I have it at the dealership currently but they can't look at it until December because of their backlog of repairs.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2022
There was a rear camera recall in 2022 which I had fixed they did a software upgrade. The EXACT same issue has returned . It’s really dangerous when backing out of spaces and I can’t see. I took to dealership and they claim my license plate cover is the issue however even without the cover the exact problem with camera exists it is the same failure

Where the 2020 fits in the CLA's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the second model year of the CLA's second generation (2019–2023).
Mercedes-Benz updated the CLA for 2023, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2023 (not on a 2020)
- Discontinuation of manual transmission
- Updated technologies and features
