Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 BMW 3 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical161 crash

Most reports concern a federal recall for an engine starter fire risk while the car is parked. Owners describe recall letters with no remedy available, dealers without parts, and estimates of two to ten months for the repair. The notice advises parking outside and away from structures, and owners say no loaner cars are offered. Other reports describe a heat management module failure that triggers limited-power mode in highway traffic, software updates that will not install, and one crash where a parked car started itself and hit a garage door.

  • Engine9No crashes

Coolant leaks are the clearest pattern. Dealers trace them to the oil filter housing, its gasket, and the heat management module. In one report, a sudden failure drains the coolant within seconds with no warning light. Active grille shutter motors fail and set a check engine light, and this year is not covered by the extended warranty given to earlier years. Collapsed motor mounts cause shudder and noise underneath, at about 80,000 miles in one case. One fire report describes smoke and flames while idling with the heater on.

  • Airbags42 crashes

Side airbags fail to deploy in two high-speed side-impact crashes, with injuries reported in both. In one, the driver's door also will not open after the collision. Passenger restraint system warnings are the other pattern, appearing on cars with no accident history. Dealers trace them to the passenger seat wiring harness or the pressure sensor in the passenger seat, with one repair quote of $2700. Owners report dealers refusing to cover the repair and avoid seating anyone in front until it is fixed.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Reaching through the grille for the secondary hood latch release, with the engine running, leads to an injury in one report. The other describes a car that sways side to side while driving and shows check engine, reduced driver assistance, and lighting system warnings within days of purchase. The dealer then finds earlier accident damage involving a critical structural safety part. With only two complaints, there is no repeated defect here, but the second case shows why accident history matters on this car.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The driver's side exterior mirror will not stay unfolded, shifts in the wind at city speeds, and loses both its power glass adjustment and heating in one report. Separately, a sunroof shatters with a loud boom at about 65 mph, at roughly 75,000 miles. With only two complaints, neither problem forms a clear pattern, but both affect what the driver can see or the safety of the cabin at speed.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 3 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Car manufacturer (BMW) has had a recall (ID 25V636000) for over two months. It requires parking the vehicle outside away from overhanging trees, because of risk of fire. BMW knows what the fix is (replace the starter motor) but has not begun recalling vehicles. Please compel BMW to perform the repair/replacement.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Over time, the wiring harness going to the knee air bag(s) can rub against the metal support tubes for the instrument panel, chafing and damaging the wiring. SIB 65 20 22

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Engine
Engine coolant leaking and took it to BMW dealer. Was advised that the issue was a oil filter housing gasket, heating control module and hose. Was advised by the Dealer that it was a common issue and happens all the time

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Engine
Error in vehicle computer software causing check engine light to show error in active grill position sensor, could lead to engine not properly cooling. Manufacturer error.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

AirbagsCrash reported
Car was t-boned by another vehicle at 65-70 MPH (other driver was cited as negligent and responsible for accident)—and other driver’s car caused damage to the BMW and driver (my daughter) due to the side airbags on the BMW not deploying (damage to daughter would have been significantly less had the BMW side airbags deployed as they should have upon impact).

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Airbags
Passenger safety restraint system warning occurred. meaning passenger air bag is not effective. Upon searching internet for the problem I realized this has been a common issue with BMW's for years. It is a very expensive fix and is a safety hazard. My dealership wants $2700 to fix the pressure sensor in the passenger seat. Until I can get this fixed I am not going to transport any passengers in the front seat, just to be safe.

Where the 2020 fits in the 3 Series's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the second model year of the 3 Series's seventh generation (2019–2023).

BMW updated the 3 Series for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • Exterior design updates
  • Interior enhancements including infotainment system
  • Powertrain updates
