Which CLA is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD27–29 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CLA that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical402 crashes

Sudden power loss while driving leads these reports. A 48-volt system malfunction warning appears, sometimes followed by a coolant overheat warning, and the car stalls or coasts to a stop at speed. Other reports describe a 12-volt battery that keeps draining, no-start problems within the first few thousand miles, start/stop failures at lights, and a center screen that goes dark and takes climate, audio, cameras and driver aids with it. Two filings describe fires, with smoke from under the hood and charred wiring. Many excerpts name other 2022 Mercedes models.

  • Fuel system261 crash

Most filings here do not describe a failure. Owners say a fuel system recall repair cannot be done because parts are unavailable, and they feel the wait has gone on too long. Most add that they have had no problem with the car. A smaller group reports power loss under acceleration with a check engine light that continued after fuel pump and charcoal filter work. One crash report describes the steering pulling right and the engine stalling. Nearly all excerpts name the GLC or GLE rather than the CLA.

  • Steering213 crashes

The main complaint is a steering wheel that shakes over bumps, potholes, manhole covers and road joints at highway speed, usually between about 45 and 65 mph. The shake lasts a few seconds and can feel like a brief loss of control. Software updates, a bracket replacement and new tires often fail to fix it, and some dealers cannot reproduce it. More serious reports describe the wheel jerking right into a semi-truck after a humming noise from the front right wheel well, and a total loss of steering on a wet expressway. Many filings name the GLC300.

  • Transmission182 crashes

The common failure is power loss at speed. The car won't accelerate, slips into neutral or stalls, sometimes with a transmission or 48-volt warning, and one freeway stall ended in a rear-end crash. Other reports describe misfires and rough idle blamed on cylinder head valve seat wear in 2.0-liter turbo engines, fuel injectors replaced twice, a diesel-like engine noise, and unintended acceleration while turning. Dealers often find no fault or prescribe a software update. Most excerpts name the GLC300 or GLE350.

  • Engine18No crashes

The main complaints are stalling and limp mode. The engine loses power on highways and surface streets, sometimes with no warning and sometimes after a yellow temperature gauge or check engine light. Early cases appear between about 1,000 and 10,000 miles. A separate pattern involves misfires from valve seat wear that require a full cylinder head replacement, showing up at high mileage just past warranty. Owners report bills from $7,200 to over $10,000. Many excerpts describe GLC and GLE models.

  • Automatic emergency braking161 crash

Phantom braking is the most common complaint. The car brakes hard or stops with nothing ahead, at speeds from about 30 to 70 mph, which risks a rear-end collision. Owners also report driver aids that shut off with "sensors dirty" or "camera view restricted" messages, adaptive cruise that speeds up after misreading speed limit signs, and one crash where Active Brake Assist did not act. Dealers often find no fault or say the system works as designed. Many filings name the C300, GLC300, GLE350 or S580.

  • Brakes111 crash

The reports fall into two groups. In one, brakes seize after rain, a car wash or several days parked. The car then needs heavy throttle to move and breaks free with a jolt or a screech, and one dealer reportedly said there is no fix. In the other, automatic braking stops the car with nothing ahead. A few owners describe a soft pedal that sinks to the floor, including one freeway crash with an injury. Another describes a clunk felt through the pedal on a nearly new car.

  • Wheels and tires11No crashes

The most serious reports involve blowouts and sidewall bubbles on large 21-inch wheels with low-profile Pirelli tires. They often follow ordinary potholes and sometimes bend or ruin the rims. Other owners say run-flat and original tires wore out early and needed replacement between 18,000 and 26,000 miles, and that stored tires showed tread separation and dry cracking with under 4,000 miles on them. Dealers often decline to help, so owners pay for replacements themselves. Most excerpts name the S-Class and GLE.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CLA owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Initially got a transmission malfunction warning and to turn car off. The cars battery keeps dying at only 1500 miles. Constantly needs to be on trickle charger. Recently the car died, charged battery. Car turned over for 3 seconds then stalled. Now car even with full battery with turn over but will not start whatsoever. Has to be towed. Multiple people ok forms reported this same issue.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Electrical
Safety was at risk when the gears switched to neutral while I was driving in car with my children. A recall was completed when bought car was not aware of fuel pumps recall issue. Says completed repair but the car is still having issues and was sold to me without telling me about the recall. First appeared about a week ago. Making a ticking noise, losing power when accelerating.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Steering
While driving with Active Cruise Control (Distronic) and with Lane Keep Assist off and Active Lane Change Assist off, the car would forcefully and suddenly try and steer me back into my lane while performing a lane change while using the blinker. It happens randomly and abruptly. Most lane changes occur without issue and there are no obstructions or other warnings that occur during these incidences.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Steering
There is a significant steering vibration as the front wheel drops in a common pothole turning at speeds above 30 mph. There is a loss of control as if the wheel is skipping. It feels like the shock absorber continues to vibrate for a few seconds. I did mention this to Mercedes-Benz during the annual maintenance service but they did not do anything.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

TransmissionCrash reported
Vehicle lost power while driving on a busy freeway and came to a complete stop and would not restart resulting in it being struck by a vehicle in the rear. More information available in the collision center pre estimate scan and full estimate.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Transmission
There is a constant acceleration failure where the car does not respond. Again today I was almost in a bad crash due to this. It is a known issue to many owners in Mercedes forums. It happens in any drive mode. Eco comfort sport. Extremely dangerous and the car should be recalled.

Where the 2022 fits in the CLA's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the fourth model year of the CLA's second generation (2019–2023).

Mercedes-Benz updated the CLA for 2023, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2022)

  • Discontinuation of manual transmission
  • Updated technologies and features
