Which 2 Series is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 BMW 2 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, RWD | 27 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cyl | AWD, RWD | 25 mpg |
- The 2020 BMW 2 Series was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 2 Series that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 BMW 2 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical171 crash
Most filings concern a recall notice warning that the engine starter can catch fire while the car is parked, with owners told to park outside and away from structures. The core complaint is a parts shortage: dealers have no remedy and no repair date, and owners describe months of waiting without loaners. Separate reports describe a heat management module failure that drops the car into reduced-power mode while merging, remote software updates that will not install, and one crash where a parked car reportedly started itself and hit a garage door.
Engine12No crashes
Coolant loss is the most common pattern. Leaks trace to the oil filter housing and its gasket, the heat management module, and hoses, and one housing failure drains the coolant within seconds with no prior warning. Active grille shutter motors also fail and set a check engine light, and the motors come only as a full shutter assembly. Other reports describe an oil pump failure at 38,000 miles that forces an engine shutdown, collapsed motor mounts that cause shuddering, and one car that catches fire while idling with the heater on.
Overheating warnings come with coolant loss, and in one case the engine stalls while pulling in. One car leaks coolant under the engine and the warning returns the same day, yet the dealer cannot locate the leak. Another needs a long list of repairs at an independent shop, including hoses, the oil filter, the PCV system, and the valve cover gasket. These reports echo the coolant leaks described under the engine category.
Airbags63 crashes
Serious collisions end with no deployment in three crash reports, with six people injured, including high-speed side impacts. In one, the driver's door also will not open after the crash. The other pattern is a passenger restraint warning on cars never in an accident, traced to the passenger seat air bag, its wiring harness, or the seat pressure sensor. One dealer quotes $2700 for the sensor repair, and dealers decline to cover the cost.
Suspension31 crash
Only a few reports, with no clear pattern. A front tie rod buckles while backing into a parking space at low speed with no impact, leaving the car unable to steer properly and needing a tow. One crash report with an injury describes the drivetrain locking up on the highway after a dealer repair. Another owner suspects a tow truck damaged the axle while dragging the car.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Headlight housings fog up in rain, scattering the low beams so they light only 15-30 feet ahead. The dealer could not replicate the problem once the lenses cleared, and the failure came at about 34,000 miles. Other reports concern the instrument cluster: no indicator shows whether the low beams are on, so a driver may run on daytime lights with the taillights off, and a light sensor dims the digital gauges until they are hard to read in daylight.
Brakes21 crash
Both reports describe pressing the brake pedal and the car failing to stop, with no warning light. One low-speed failure ends in a rear-end crash with two people injured, and the dealer finds no fault before the problem returns. The other is traced to a failed brake booster at about 86,000 miles and repaired. Two reports are too few to show a pattern, but the loss of braking is a serious crash risk.
Steering21 crash
Only two reports. One describes losing power steering assist and the car shutting off while driving, ending in a crash that totals the car. The other is not a steering failure at all. That owner describes a fire-risk recall letter, months with no response from the manufacturer, and uncertainty about whether an independent mechanic can service the car while the recall stays open.
Body and structure2No crashes
Neither report points to a factory structural defect. One describes a hand injury while reaching through the grille to find the secondary hood latch. The other involves a used car that sways side to side and shows multiple warnings soon after purchase, including reduced driver assistance and a check engine light. Service later finds the car had a prior accident and a critical structural safety problem.
In owners' own words

Car manufacturer (BMW) has had a recall (ID 25V636000) for over two months. It requires parking the vehicle outside away from overhanging trees, because of risk of fire. BMW knows what the fix is (replace the starter motor) but has not begun recalling vehicles. Please compel BMW to perform the repair/replacement.

Engine coolant leaking and took it to BMW dealer. Was advised that the issue was a oil filter housing gasket, heating control module and hose. Was advised by the Dealer that it was a common issue and happens all the time

Error in vehicle computer software causing check engine light to show error in active grill position sensor, could lead to engine not properly cooling. Manufacturer error.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
Car was t-boned by another vehicle at 65-70 MPH (other driver was cited as negligent and responsible for accident)—and other driver’s car caused damage to the BMW and driver (my daughter) due to the side airbags on the BMW not deploying (damage to daughter would have been significantly less had the BMW side airbags deployed as they should have upon impact).
Filed with NHTSA, March 2022
Passenger safety restraint system warning occurred. meaning passenger air bag is not effective. Upon searching internet for the problem I realized this has been a common issue with BMW's for years. It is a very expensive fix and is a safety hazard. My dealership wants $2700 to fix the pressure sensor in the passenger seat. Until I can get this fixed I am not going to transport any passengers in the front seat, just to be safe.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2024
A towing company came to pick up the car. They may have damaged the carriage/axel based on the tire mark they left on our drive way. The lines were not straight and it looks like they dragged the car.
