Which Aviator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Lincoln Aviator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.0L 6-cylGas4WD, RWD20–21 mpg
3.0L 6-cylPlug-in hybrid4WD460 mi range
  • The 2022 Lincoln Aviator was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Aviator that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Lincoln Aviator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical6No crashes

A high-voltage alert can shut the vehicle down and lock it up, leaving it undrivable until it is towed, and the problem can recur. A door-ajar warning can stay on with every door shut, which keeps the dome lights lit and stops the doors from locking, even after repeat dealer visits. One injury report describes the kick-sensor power tailgate closing on a person without stopping. Other complaints describe a center screen that never dims at night, ABS lockup on slopes, and a roof leak near the rearview mirror.

  • Body and structure6No crashes

Roof leaks are the most common report. Owners hear water rushing overhead, find water stains and later rust stains on the headliner, and smell mold through the vents, with one case near 20,000 miles. Exterior trim on the liftgate and rear doors can come loose or fall off while driving because the clips break, in one case at very low mileage. Wind noise from the front passenger side at highway speed is hard for dealers to reproduce. One owner reports the hood popping up to its first catch after a bump.

  • Backup camera41 crash

The backup camera image can fail to appear in reverse, or the whole screen goes black, so the driver has no rear view. These complaints include low-speed collisions while backing up, and one crash injured an occupant of the other vehicle. Owners also say the parking warning tone sounds only at or after impact. Some cameras fail again after being replaced. Several owners report getting a recall notice and then waiting because the dealer had no parts for the repair.

  • Fuel system4No crashes

The engine can stall while the car is moving, including on highway on-ramps and at around 50 mph. Sometimes it restarts and sometimes it needs a tow, and there is often no warning light. One stall happened at about 47,000 miles. Hesitation when pressing the accelerator also shows up, and dealers could not find a cause. Most of these complaints are about waiting on a recall: owners got notices, but dealers said the repair parts were not yet available.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

The Autosense wipers do not clear the windshield well enough to see at highway speed. Getting regular intermittent wiping means turning off auto wipers in the touchscreen menu while driving. Dealers often find no fault or stored codes. Some owners say a replaced rain sensor failed again within months. The rear camera can also mistake steady rain for an obstacle, which triggers collision avoidance and blocks reversing unless the driver switches that system off. One owner reports bumping a pedestrian while backing up.

  • Airbags22 crashes

The airbags did not deploy in frontal collisions, including a hard head-on hit with a tree that broke the frame in two places. Both complaints here involve crashes, and one is also marked as fire-related. Responders and repair shops at the scene questioned why no airbag went off. This category has only two reports, but both describe a failure during a serious impact.

  • Engine2No crashes

Stalling at interstate speed is the main report, with partial loss of control as the driver coasts to the shoulder. In one case the car sat at the dealer for almost 5 months without a repair because technicians found nothing in the logs and were waiting on a pending fix. The other complaint says only that the remedy is not yet available. These reports center on stalls that stay unrepaired while owners wait.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The whole vehicle can lose electrical power while driving. The switches stop responding, the car can block the road, and it may need a tow, though it sometimes restarts on its own after a few minutes. The failure can happen more than once. Harsh shifting is the other complaint. The transmission slams into park with a jolt, and shifting from park to reverse can hesitate and then lurch backward with a burst of speed.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Aviator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My Aviator was parked with trunk open to load groceries from shopping cart. Must have stepped under bumper such that it triggered the kick sensor to close the tailgate. The problem is, it did NOT detect spouse’s body, did NOT stop the tailgate from closing & as a result, hit him on the head. He jolted out of the way & the tailgate continued to close all the way. This is serious safety issue!

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Electrical
Door ajar notification continues to illuminate when all doors are secure. First incident happened on 1/25/2022. Was sent in for repair and returned on 2/2/2022. Issue happened again while driving on the interstate on 3/10/2022, and is back in for repair. This notification causes domes lights to continue to illuminate which is a danger at night, and will not allow for doors to lock.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Body and structure
Rear door trim came loose and fell off while driving. Had the service department at the local dealership look at the missing trim on the rear of the car and they noticed multiple of the plastic clips holding the trim on the rear were broken and remained in the area where the trim was attached.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Body and structure
Vehicle had roof leak which resulted in visible water stains on roof liner, issue persists with now having rust stains on liner from the same area the roof leak was occurring.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Where the 2022 fits in the Aviator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the third model year of the Aviator's second generation (2020–2023).

Lincoln updated the Aviator for 2025, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2022)

  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Refreshed interior
  • Redesigned headlights
  • Discontinued plug-in hybrid Grand Touring trim
