Which Aviator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Lincoln Aviator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

3.0L 6-cylPlug-in hybrid4WD460 mi range
  • The 2023 Lincoln Aviator was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Aviator that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Lincoln Aviator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

Backup and 360-degree camera images glitch, pixelate, or turn blue or black without warning. This often happens while reversing or turning the steering wheel, so the driver loses rear visibility. Several reports say the fault keeps coming back after recall work, including software updates and replaced cameras and image processing modules. A separate complaint describes the center screen going black when a phone is plugged in. It usually recovers once the phone is unplugged, but not always.

  • Backup camera31 crash

The rear-view camera glitches, or the display flips to the front view while the car is in reverse. One of the three complaints involves a crash. In that case the system gave no alert and the vehicle backed into a trailer, damaging the rear hatch. Other complaints describe recall repairs that did not fix the glitching, and a recall repair delayed because parts were not available. Reported mileages range from 8,000 to 43,300.

  • Engine3No crashes

Stalling on acceleration is the main concern. It is reported when pulling away from a stop and at highway speed, and owners describe near-miss accidents. Repeated dealer visits have not fixed it, and in one case the problem was getting worse at about 23,000 miles. One stall came after a hesitation followed by low oil pressure and low battery warnings. The dealer then found low oil and metal in the engine. Another complaint describes exhaust leaks at several pipe joints, marked by carbon deposits, and only one joint was repaired.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Aviator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The backup camera glitches while backing up and turning the steering wheel causing issues with visibility. This is a safety issue because it affects your ability to see where you are going while in reverse. This is a brand new car and this issue should not be occurring.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Electrical
I had all recalls taken care of for my new vehicle I purchased yet I am still having issues with the screen going all black and not working when having my cellphone plugged in. Usually it will come back on once I unplug it but not always.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Engine
This vehicle continues to randomly stall upon acceleration from a dead stop. There have been numerous times this has created a near- miss accident. It has been in for service on several occasions since owning it with no resolve. This issue has been ongoing since owning it and only getting worse. Current mileage is approx 23,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Engine
I did an inspection of my exhaust system and saw numerous carbon deposits along both pipes at different joints. I brought this to the attention of the dealer and they repaired only one (1) leaking joint at the tailpipe. They told me the other leaking joints are normal and are of no concern. I have a video, pictures and the dealer inspection/repair forms from two (2) different service dates.

Where the 2023 fits in the Aviator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the fourth model year of the Aviator's second generation (2020–2023).

Lincoln updated the Aviator for 2025, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2023)

  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Refreshed interior
  • Redesigned headlights
  • Discontinued plug-in hybrid Grand Touring trim
