Which Aviator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Lincoln Aviator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.0L 6-cylGas4WD, RWD20–21 mpg
3.0L 6-cylPlug-in hybrid4WD460 mi range
  • The 2021 Lincoln Aviator was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Aviator that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Lincoln Aviator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The power liftgate can slam shut without stopping or reversing when something is in its path, and this category includes 2 injuries. Other reports describe the car braking on its own with a "brake applied, power reduced" message, or shutting off while driving, which risks a crash. Owners also describe batteries going dead again and again, along with warning messages, false door-open alerts and alarms going off. Backup and side cameras show black or blue screens, and the Sync screen sometimes fails to dim at night. Dealers often cannot find the cause.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Plug-in hybrid versions can go dead after short trips. The dash stays dark, the car will not start or take a jump, and the parking brake stays locked, so it has to be towed. Charging faults are also reported, and in one case the charge port sparked, smelled of burning and smoked. Some drivers describe the car dropping into neutral when they press the accelerator in intersections, or suddenly downshifting at highway speed, leaving them close to being hit. A parked car rolling backward on a hill is also reported.

  • Engine4No crashes

Seized motors show up on nearly new cars. The car shakes, shuts off while driving and will not restart, and dealers find it needs a complete engine replacement. Two of these failures came at 4,181 and 5,400 miles. At higher mileage, owners report a sudden loss of power with heavy, foul-smelling smoke from the tailpipe. A cracked exhaust flex pipe at the catalytic converter is also reported. It rattles at idle and lets exhaust fumes into the cabin, and the owner was told the repair was not covered by warranty.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The rear camera flickers, shows distorted images, turns into a blue screen or shows nothing while the car is reversing. That makes it hard to see people or objects behind this large vehicle. The problem tends to get more frequent over time. Most of these complaints are about delays in the fix, not the failure itself. Owners say dealers told them recall repair parts were unavailable, with no date given. In one case a replacement camera did not stop the failure.

  • Seats2No crashes

A heated seat burned a hole through the seat cushion and the driver's coat and caused a burning feeling on the skin, so this category is flagged as fire-related. The risk is burns to anyone in that seat. The other report covers a third-row seat whose folding switch stopped working, leaving the seat stuck in the down position. No mileage pattern appears for either problem.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The rear door trim on the driver's side comes loose and flies off while the car is moving. Water also leaks into the cabin through the sunroof after rain. One dealer traced the leak to clogged sunroof drain tubes, but it came back after the repair. The other complaint covers no failure at all. That owner was waiting for parts to finish a recall repair, and the dealer said they would arrive at the end of June 2026.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

The engine stalls at highway speed with the check engine light on and may not restart, which leaves the car stranded in traffic. At low speed, the car can stop responding to the accelerator and show a "Shift to Park" message, then work again after a restart. Owners link these problems to an open recall. They say repair parts were not available and that one dealer would only fix the car at the owner's expense.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The trim piece on the rear driver-side window falls off at highway speed, which is a hazard to traffic behind. In heavy snow, the textured wheel-well material collects packed ice and slush that will not come off easily. The buildup fills the space around the tires and makes steering difficult.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Aviator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The vehicle is intermittently braking on its own while driving. The issue has become significantly worse over the course of a month. The dashboard message reads, “brake applied, power reduced”. This is a danger to both myself and other drivers as we are unable to control the speed of the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Electrical
The backup camera and 360 degree camera periodically malfunction and display a blue image. The backup camera does not work again until I restart the vehicle. This has happened both on a roadway while parallel parking and in a parking garage.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Engine
Vehicle has 5400 miles and has catastrophic engine failure while driving. Vehicle towed to dealership and diagnosed engine seized needs complete engine replacement

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Backup camera
It has been almost a half year and still no solution for backup camera that shows blue screen. It is happening more and more. It is a big vehicle (and expensive one) . When backing up, one is at a great disadvantage with just a blue screen. You cannot see people or other objects. Car dealership says they do not know when it will be rectified. I think Ford/Lincoln is dragging their feet, using COVID as an excuse.

Where the 2021 fits in the Aviator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the second model year of the Aviator's second generation (2020–2023).

Lincoln updated the Aviator for 2025, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2021)

  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Refreshed interior
  • Redesigned headlights
  • Discontinued plug-in hybrid Grand Touring trim
