Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Jeep Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical991 crash

Sudden shutdowns and no-start conditions lead this category. Reports describe the car losing power while driving, demanding a shift to park mid-turn, refusing to shift or turn off, and dead 12-volt batteries that cannot be jump-started, often on nearly new cars. Plug-in hybrid owners say the high-voltage battery drains or electric mode stops working, and some are waiting on a battery recall repair with no parts. Two filings describe fires, one after parking and one under the car at highway speed. Burning smells, warm AC air, and a hot, blank touchscreen also appear.

  • Transmission27No crashes

Sudden loss of power at highway speed is the main pattern. Drivers describe abrupt slowing, a "Service Transmission" warning, safety systems switching off, and loss of power steering and brake assist. Some cars then refuse to leave park or will not shut down, and one owner had to disconnect the 12-volt battery. Problems often begin within the first few thousand miles, and dealers frequently find no codes. Repairs mentioned include a replaced transmission, a valve body and transmission control module, and a turbocharger. Several owners also say they are waiting on an engine recall repair with no fix available.

  • Engine21No crashes

Most filings here describe waiting, not a breakdown. Owners say an open engine recall cannot be completed because dealers have no parts, and many say they have waited months while still driving the car. A smaller group reports real symptoms: loss of motive power around 25,000 miles, rough running and hesitation, unexpected revving, and a stall when shifting into park. One buyer of a used example reports exhaust fumes entering the cabin along with a Service 4WD warning and a hybrid check engine light.

  • Exterior lights16No crashes

High beams that will not come on with the headlight switch in Auto drive most complaints. Drivers must hold the stalk back or switch the lights to On to get high beams. Owners report two or three dealer visits, including what they were told was a recall repair, with the problem unchanged, and some dealers say no fix exists. Other reports cover small rear turn signals that following drivers struggle to see, taillights that stay dark until turned on manually, and a recurring right headlight service warning.

  • Steering72 crashes

Sudden power steering loss shows up in several reports, often with a cascade of warnings for lane assist, auto park, SOS calling, and the passenger airbag. One steering rack was replaced at 3,216 miles after a boot popped open. Other filings describe a front-end clunk that dealers hear but cannot trace, and full vehicle shutdowns while moving. Two filings are crash-related, one of them fatal, involving a vehicle stopped in a traffic lane and a shutdown while exiting a car wash.

  • Brakes72 crashes

Unexpected surges forward while braking to a stop are the most serious pattern, and two such reports involve crashes. Other drivers describe a pedal that jammed with almost no travel at less than 1,800 miles, a mushy pedal that sank near the floor with ABS warnings, an ABS unit that failed internally, and the parking brake and auto park engaging at a stop sign. False forward collision braking at highway speed also appears, with mechanics unable to find a fault.

  • Automatic emergency braking7No crashes

Automatic emergency braking that fails to engage, or engages for no reason, defines this category. Owners describe AEB service and limited-functionality warnings on cars with as few as 11 miles, the system ignoring stopped vehicles during dealer test drives, and false hard braking at 137 miles. Dealers often find no codes, or reprogram the system without fixing it. One report ties disabled radar and driver aids to a cooling system fault after a long wait for hybrid battery parts. Forward parking sensors that stop warning also appear.

  • Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes

Unintended acceleration is the core complaint. Drivers describe the car surging while adaptive cruise control is active, accelerating at low speed despite pressure on the brake, and a false forward collision stop followed by runaway acceleration that left one driver injured. Other reports cover random downshifts on the freeway and the transmission hanging in gear below 20 mph. Reported mileages range widely, from about 5,422 to 114,213, and dealers have not resolved several of these cases.

Electrical
My jeep is a 2024, with just about 12,000 miles. On Monday, May 5, 2025. My Air Conditioner stopped working. It was only blowing out warm air. Now I’m told there’s some kind of AC leak and it will take 2-5 days for parks and a full day to repair. After reading reviews. This is a known issue with 2022 jeeps. This needs to be an issue with 2024. This is my 3rd jeep and I’ve never had issues like this.

ElectricalCrash reported
THERE IS a safety recall on vehicle that Manufacturer Safety recall issued. there is no remedy. while reading all of the safety issues that come with this. this is not a great way to feel as you drive with fear vehicle may stop operating while you are driving and can cause an accident.

Transmission
In traffic, in drive, at speed 40 MPH, vehicle shifted automatic transmission to low gear, dropped speed to 10 MPH, every alarm indicator came on, RPMs were in the 6K red line range, was able to pull of the road, engine shut down, was not able to shift, restart, or use key fob functions. Towed to dealer replaced aux battery, replaced TCM valve body assembly. Vehicle mileage 4,380.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Transmission
Vehicle acceleration stops at high altitudes which causes the vehicle to suddenly maintain lower gear and speeds while driving on interstate/highway. Vehicle had accelerator replaced by delearship at 1,406 miles, however the issue continued. Dealership is now replacing turbocharger engine after reporting failure at 3,500 miles.

Engine
Avis rented me this car with an active safety recall. The key fob even had a small sticker on it that had "Safety Recall" handwritten on it, indicating they were aware there was an active safety recall (these things are literally lighting on fire) -- and put me and my family's lives at risk. This is a flagrant violation of the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act. They refused to fully refund me for this glaring breach in safety.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Engine
While driving on the highway at 65mph, the car suddenly lost power in middle of traffic and stopped. I was barely able to park on side of the road and was facing a severe risk of being crashed into! I was able to restart the vehicle after 7min by holding stop start button for long time

Exterior lights
I have had this 2024 Grand Cherokee for barely 4 months and this is the second time I have gotten the notification “Automatic Emergency braking needs servicing” and “Right Lighting needs servicing” the AEB nor forward collision warning works and last time I brought it in they said the right head light was continuously running which is why it needed servicing and here I am 2 weeks later with the exact same issue.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

this car has been worked on twice with negative results, now the dealer has told me Jeep does not want to try to repair it until further investigation.it does not comeply with FMVSS No.108 recall repair 12B Wich was performed twice with negative results.I think they are avoiding the lemon law by not trying to repair it a third time.No loaner or compensation offered.
