Which Cherokee is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 24–25 mpg |
| 3.2L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 22–23 mpg |
- The 2020 Jeep Cherokee was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Cherokee that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Jeep Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission1482 crashes
Transmissions shift harshly, slip, refuse to engage drive or reverse, or drop into neutral while moving, often with a check engine light. Several owners need a full transmission replacement. Some of these happen within the first few thousand miles, and others between 77,278 and 88,000 miles. Other reports describe the engine revving without the car accelerating, stalling at stops, and 4WD or traction control warnings traced to rear differential parts. Two filings involve crashes and two involve fires. Many reports in this group describe a Grand Cherokee rather than a Cherokee.
Electrical713 crashes
Cars shut off while driving or at lights, then refuse to restart or stay stuck in park with a message to place the vehicle in park. Owners blame long cranking before the engine starts on the fuel pumps. Other reports cover 4WD, traction and stability warnings that end in a transfer case replacement, failed active grille shutters, climate controls that freeze and let the windows fog, and a delaminating center touchscreen. Three filings describe crashes after the vehicle surged or the brakes stopped responding.
Engine39No crashes
Fires dominate this category. Six filings describe the engine compartment catching fire, sometimes while parked and sometimes while driving after a burning smell or loss of power. Some of these cars had only 13,000 to 16,800 miles. Other reports describe coolant leaks, failed water pumps, a cracked oil housing that put oil into the coolant, and head gasket leaks with cylinder misfires around 115,000 miles, where a dealer suggested a new engine. One camshaft and lifter failure shows up first as a faint ticking. Several of these owners drive a Grand Cherokee.
Steering283 crashes
Power steering cuts out or the wheel suddenly turns heavy, often with a power steering warning on the dash, and drivers cannot finish a turn. Three crashes are reported. In one the steering seized at about 25 mph, and another is blamed on a fractured steering rack. Dealers replace the whole steering gear because the module inside cannot be serviced. Other complaints describe a notchy wheel that hangs up near center, a constant pull to the right, and clunks from the front suspension over bumps.
Airbags1513 crashes
Serious frontal crashes end with no deployment, and that is the main pattern here. Thirteen of the 15 filings involve crashes: head-on and T-bone impacts that totaled the vehicle while no air bags went off, or deployed only partly. Reported injuries include concussions, broken ribs, a cracked sternum and a fractured vertebra. One owner reports every air bag firing at highway speed with no impact. Another finds a bag hanging out below the steering column.
Brakes133 crashes
The electronic parking brake engages on its own, both at stops and while moving, including at highway speeds of 55 and 70 mph. The car comes to a sudden stop. Dealers often find no stored codes and send owners home. Other reports describe automatic emergency braking slamming on from a standstill, a front brake locking during a swerve, and an ABS module replaced three times. Three filings involve crashes, including a rollover after a front brake locked.
Acceleration and cruise control104 crashes
Cruise control overshoots the set speed, in one case climbing from 60 to 80 mph, and pressing the plus button can make the setting jump in large steps. Dealers say the system works as designed. Four filings describe crashes after the vehicle surged while parking or backing up and kept going despite the brake. Some of those owners add that collision avoidance did not step in. Other reports describe sudden loss of power and stalling.
Fuel system9No crashes
Fuel leaks are the most serious reports here. A cracked plastic fuel line fitting or a failed fuel supply tube sprays or pours fuel onto a hot engine or a garage floor. In a separate pattern the engine cranks but does not start until a second try, which dealers trace to the fuel pumps. One fuel pump fails outright, stalling the engine and taking power steering and brakes with it. Owners also describe gas station pumps clicking off early, as if the tank were full.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Cherokee owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
At approximately 54,000 miles the transmission is not shifting. I parked in a parking spot, go into a store. Then come out and the vehicle will not shift into park or reverse. The check engine light came on for the park by wire issue. These transmissions have been known to have rough shifting and my vehicle has been no exception. It’s shifted rough at low speeds and the eco mode and auto start/stop system have also made it feel less than smooth to drive.

While traveling Vehicle intermittent hard shifts, or no shifts, goes into neutral unexcitingly, sometimes no reverse. SES light on. 77,278 miles Dealer advised stored code - TCM P0733-00 Gear 3 Shift Incorrect Ratio. Dealer also advised vehicle needs Transmission replaced, Repair estimate $5970.28 Previous issues include ABS system repair and engine coil pack issue.

Bought jeep in December 2020. Currently at 8000 miles. In October 2021, the vehicle would not turn off. The push button would go between ACC and Start but not in the off. Dealership has never seen this and after 8 days, are not able to definitively tell me what the issue is. The assumption has been given that the car is not recognizing that the vehicle is in Park. This is an assumption as whatever diagnosis that is being done is not finding the error.

Transfer case had to be replaced. Service 4 wheel drive light came on along with traction control warning. Also, electronic stability control warning. Steering and movement were sluggish. Only had 51,000 miles in it. Not happy to have paid almost $1,400. for the repair. This should have been a recall because as I understand, many other owners have had the same exact issue. Please look into this. Thank you.

P0303 code. Misfire in cylinder 3. Blown head gasket. 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Car is only five years old with 115000 miles. Dealer suggested a new engine. A $12,000.00 expense to the consumer. $20,000.00 still owed to bank. After much research, it’s clear as day that this is an engineering flaw. Thousands of Pentastar engines have this recurring failure.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
Water pump has failed at 61, 573 miles. Jeep issued a warranty extension for water pumps in the 2013-2017 models. It appears they have not corrected the defects in their water pumps.

Jeep has 36,000 miles, it has a very knotty feeling in the steering wheel when trying drive straight. It feels like the steering wheel gets hung up when trying to slightly turn left/right. Constantly having to chase the road. No wrecks, or accidents on our jeep. It happens at highway speeds and normal city driving as well. I read of a recall for steering gear in 2019-2020 jeep but our jeep is not showing a recall for this problem.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2023
Lost control of steering which pushed vehicle to left and hit a retaining wall then to the right of the interstate. There were no warning lights. After vehicle stopped found front end had fallen off and left front tire was sitting on it's side.
