Which Sonata is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Hyundai Sonata. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD28–32 mpg
2.0L 4-cylHybridFWD47 mpg
  • The 2025 Hyundai Sonata was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sonata that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Hyundai Sonata, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

The speedometer reads faster than the car is actually going. Reported errors run 1-4 mph at some times and 6-8 mph at others, checked against GPS and roadside speed signs. One report says a dealer applied a speedometer update during a visit for a radio update recall and gave no paperwork for it. A separate complaint concerns the gear selector. Pushing it down selected reverse, which is the opposite of what the driver expected, and the car nearly backed off a drop. No crashes are recorded in this category.

  • Backup camera21 crash

Two problems appear here, and one led to a crash. A hybrid surged forward on its own at about 1 mph while switching from electric to gasoline power. It hit objects in a garage and suffered heavy front-end damage, with no warning and no automatic braking before impact. The other complaint involves the rear collision braking system. It stops the car from reversing when it detects an object, and it switches itself back on at every start even after the driver turns it off. That report lists an injury.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Two fuel complaints are on file. In one, the gas tank was found loose during a fill-up on a car that only the selling dealer had serviced. In the other, a heavy gasoline smell fills the cabin after topping off the tank or after any later fill-up, and it stays there. Neither report mentions a fire or a leak on the ground, but a fuel odor inside the cabin needs a prompt inspection.
