Which G70 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Genesis G70. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, RWD23–25 mpg
3.3L 6-cylAWD, RWD20 mpg
  • The 2019 Genesis G70 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A G70 that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Genesis G70, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Fuel system9No crashes

Cars jerk, refuse to accelerate, or lose power at highway speeds, sometimes with a check engine light and sometimes with no warning. Mechanics and dealers who diagnosed these cars found failed fuel pumps, including the high-pressure pump. Most filings are about a recall notice where the repair part was not available, and owners say the wait has gone on too long. One owner was told to pay for the repair and seek reimbursement later. Another says the problem came back right after an engine software update. Losing power on the highway leaves the driver stranded in traffic.

The high-pressure fuel pump fails, and the car loses all power on the highway, logging code P0088. Most of these filings are about trouble getting recall work done. One dealer refused the recall repair because the car set P0091 instead of P0088. Another owner found no authorized repair center in the state, and local Hyundai dealers also refused the job. Owners say they were warned about a fire risk while waiting for help.

  • Electrical8No crashes

The touchscreen goes black, freezes, or stops taking input, often while running Apple CarPlay, and owners say it can pull attention off the road. One screen also peeled and distorted around 45,000 miles, and no replacement parts could be found. Half the filings are about a recall notice the owner received with no parts at dealers, sometimes for months. Other reports describe a sudden power drop under hard acceleration and front seats that recline but will not come back upright, leaving seatbelts unusable and a large repair bill.

  • Transmission71 crash

Engines stall or shut off in traffic, and some owners report it more than once. Twin-turbo AWD cars can hesitate for up to 10 seconds after the gas pedal is pressed, then surge forward. Other cars stall at startup and sound starved for fuel, and one dealer answered with only a software update. Also reported: an oil pressure light that flickers at idle, auto start/stop shutting the engine off completely at lights, trouble selecting a gear, and a car that seized. In one crash report, a manual car lurches backward at startup and hits a garage door frame.

  • Engine7No crashes

The oil pressure sensor fails and turns on a warning lamp without other symptoms, sometimes on the highway, and owners say dealers deny warranty coverage. One owner reports oil leaking from the left turbo oil feed line and fears a fire, with no recall remedy or loaner offered. Another describes a stall at a traffic light in heavy heat that the dealer could not reproduce, followed by an offer to replace the fuel pump. Recall work for a reported fire risk is also delayed for months.

The oil pressure light turns on while the car sits still and goes off once the engine revs or the car moves, sometimes shortly after an oil change. One dealer suspects the oil pressure switch. Other filings involve the turbocharger oil feed pipe. One owner found a recall marked completed by another dealer when the work had never been done, and the manufacturer denied coverage. Owners also report recall parts that were not yet available.

  • Brakes51 crash

The steering wheel, brake pedal, and eventually the whole car shake under braking, including from highway speed. Dealers resurface the rotors, but the vibration returns, and some owners switched to aftermarket pads and rotors. On some rear-drive cars, a sensor suddenly quits and takes ABS, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring offline with it. One crash report describes the car sliding and turning sideways under gentle braking on an icy road. Another filing is about a recall repair delayed because the part was unavailable.

  • Airbags32 crashes

In two crash reports, air bags stay folded in serious impacts: a freeway sideswipe by an 18-wheeler and a head-on deer strike at 65 mph. One driver reports two crashes in the same week in which the car kept accelerating despite attempts to stop, and suffered a mild concussion. Another reports random warnings that the whole air bag system is down while driving, along with an air leak that fogged the windows after 2,000 miles.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

The sunroof glass bursts with a loud bang at highway speed, with no warning, impact, or ice involved, and glass falls into the cabin. Separately, sunroofs click over rough pavement, and dealers say they know about it but have no fix. The driver-side power-folding mirror also tilts fully up or down by itself, blocking the view when changing lanes. In one case it came back after a warranty repair, and the dealer refused to replace it again.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints G70 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
When driving the vehicle it feels as though as it stalls due to choking all or some of the fuel getting to the engine. This is most prone when accelerating fast. It feels as though the fuel is shut off or severely diminished as the vehicle will accelerate, but at a fraction (crawl) of the normal output available and accomplished in the past.

Engine
NHTSA Recall Number 24V-107 I received notice of this recall in February. I was warned of a fire risk. I keep calling the dealer and reaching out to Genesis corporate and no remedy is available. It has been several months and this is unacceptable given the safety risk.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Engine
Oil leaking on left side turbo from turbo oil feed line. No remedy for recall, manufacturer not willing to provide alternative transportation until remedy is available. If oil leak continues, fire is likely to occur.

How the 2019 compares with other G70 years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2019 has the most owner complaints of the 6 G70 years we cover, about 4.8 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2019 fits in the G70's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the first model year of the G70's first generation (2019–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Genesis fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Genesis updated the G70 for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)

  • New corporate design cues from GV80 and G80
  • Updated front and rear bumpers, headlights, and taillights
  • New grill design
  • Optional 10.25-inch infotainment screen

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
