Which G70 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Genesis G70. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, RWD23–24 mpg
3.3L 6-cylAWD, RWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2022 Genesis G70 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A G70 that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Genesis G70, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Fuel system6No crashes

Power drops suddenly in traffic, every dash light comes on, and the car falls into limp mode, sometimes unable to go faster than 40 mph. It has happened on nearly new cars and at about 46,000 miles. Several complaints are about a recall repair. Owners describe dealers with no parts in stock and fuel-pressure symptoms that continue after the work. Some say only a software update was done and the high-pressure fuel pump was never replaced. Warranty replacement of the fuel injectors also comes up. Losing power without warning in traffic is a clear crash risk.

The car fails to accelerate when the pedal is pressed and can lose power completely, including while climbing a hill. The fault comes and goes, and dealers have not found the cause. Recall delays also show up here: owners get the recall notice before the repair part is available. Losing power on a grade with passengers in the car is a real crash risk.

  • Exterior lights5No crashes

Condensation and standing water build up inside the headlight assemblies, and the problem often moves to the other side after one lamp is replaced. Small cracks show up along the lens seams and near the mounting screws. Enough moisture can knock out the turn signal and set off a dash warning. Dealers have tried silica packs, told owners to run the high beams to dry the lens, or replaced the whole assembly. Some replacements were covered under warranty. Others were refused once cracks were found or coverage ran out. One report puts onset near 14,000 miles.

  • Engine3No crashes

Power fades or cuts out when the accelerator is pressed, and limp mode can hold the car to 30 to 45 mph. The check engine light comes on in some cases and stays dark in others. Restarting brings power back for a while, but the fault returns. Dealers often cannot reproduce it or find the cause. One report is fire-related: the car lost power, then the engine caught fire and the car burned. A hesitation case appears near 30,000 miles. Sudden power loss in traffic and fire are both serious safety risks.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Every dash warning lights up at once and the car drops into limp mode, slowing sharply from road speed to a crawl within seconds. Dealers have kept cars for long stretches and found nothing wrong. Other electrical complaints trace back to the headlights. Moisture and cracks near the mounting screws make a headlight cut out while driving, or leave the daytime running lights and turn signals dead. Some owners were denied coverage after being told rock chips caused the cracks or that condensation is normal. Slowing suddenly in traffic raises crash risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints G70 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I was driving my vehicle when all of a sudden my passenger side headlight went out. I initially thought it was a light bulb I needed to fix. I turned the vehicle on after a few hours and the light was working again, but on occasion the light randomly turns off while I am driving. I looked online how to fix it and found multiple people with same issue and condensation build up which mine has without being damage.

Recall repairs are free at any Genesis dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V528000Fuel systemJul 2024

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Veloster N, 2019-2023 Genesis G70, 2022-2023 Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The fuel pump may fail, which can result in a loss of drive power.

Risk: A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update engine control module software. In addition, dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 9, 2024. Some interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed September 3, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 262 and 023G.
