Which G70 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Genesis G70. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, RWD23–25 mpg
3.3L 6-cylAWD, RWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2023 Genesis G70 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A G70 that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Genesis G70, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Sudden power loss at highway speed is the main pattern. The car enters limp mode and will not accelerate past a certain speed, even with the pedal floored, and the dash may light up with warnings. Some drivers report high RPM with sluggish response. The problem comes and goes, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Restarting usually brings back normal driving for a while. The risk is getting stuck in traffic, unable to merge or pass. A separate report describes a rear whine, like a wheel bearing, above about 40 mph that rises in pitch with speed.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Random limp mode and engine shutdowns lead these reports. Cars lose power at any speed and need a restart to recover. In one case the engine died in a parking lot and would not run for hours. Dealers sometimes find no error codes. Owners link the problem to the fuel pump and say repairs have not fixed it. Other reports describe a strong gasoline smell after remote start, which raises fire worries, and false slippery-road warnings on the dash. Several cases involve long dealer waits, back-ordered parts, or waiting on tech support.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Moisture and condensation inside the headlight housings is the main complaint. Once water gets in, the turn signal may stop flashing properly and a "check turn signal" message appears. Owners also report headlights going out, including at night, and fog forming in one lamp and then the other. Dealers have blamed cracked housings, but owners say the lenses are intact. Repairs are described as expensive, and some cars fog up again after being fixed.

  • Engine2No crashes

Power loss while accelerating onto the highway is the pattern here. The car hesitates, jerks, or stalls, then enters limp mode and will not go past roughly 50 mph, even with the pedal floored. Drivers end up in the slow lane with hazards on, unable to keep up with traffic. One report ties the fault to the fuel pump and fuel rail pressure, with code P0191 coming back after a dealer software update. Both complaints describe a problem that keeps returning after earlier service.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Veloster N, 2019-2023 Genesis G70, 2022-2023 Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The fuel pump may fail, which can result in a loss of drive power.

Risk: A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update engine control module software. In addition, dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 9, 2024. Some interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed September 3, 2024.
