  • The 2021 Ford F-150 was sold in six versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A F-150 that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Ford F-150, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission3152 crashes

Rear axle hub bolts shear, and the break is often found during a routine tire rotation. Some owners heard a ticking sound before it failed, the sign described in Ford's 22B34 program. In the worst cases the wheel comes off or the rear end locks up while driving. Some trucks built outside the program's May to September 2021 window fail the same way. The transmission is the second big problem: hard downshifts, slipping, delayed upshifts, sudden drops into neutral, and full replacements. A shifter that jumps from park back into reverse has let at least one truck roll away.

  • Wipers and visibility1231 crash

Wipers stop working in rain, hesitate, or come off the truck. Most of these complaints tie back to wiper motor and arm recalls. Many filings come from owners who got a recall notice but could not get the repair because parts were not available. Others say their VIN was left out of the recall, or that the wipers failed again after the recall work. Smaller patterns include a film inside the windshield that makes night driving harder, rear windows that shatter, and roof leaks that fill the door panels with water.

Wiper motors quit without warning, often in heavy rain at night, forcing drivers to pull over. Replacement motors fail again, and one lasted about 30,000 miles after a warranty swap. Some owners find the recall wiper arms were never actually replaced, and others are told their VIN is not covered. Shattered sunroofs and rear windows also show up here. So does AC and defrost airflow that stops on the road, which Ford addressed in TSB 22-2089, and a SYNC update that froze the backup camera after startup.

  • Electrical1172 crashes

Fires lead this category, mostly on PowerBoost hybrids. Reports describe a controller module that burned and damaged the hybrid battery, and a truck that caught fire while parked. Trailer brake faults come up often: 'trailer not connected' messages, no pedal or slider output, and repeat repairs to the harness and controller. Other reports include park brake faults that leave the truck stranded, a shifter that will not go into park, dead batteries, false alarms, frozen door locks, and popping speakers. Several owners say their VIN was left out of related recalls.

  • Exterior lights70No crashes

The LED daytime running light strips in the headlamps burn out. The vertical strip usually goes first, then the horizontal strip, often on both sides. Failures cluster just past the factory warranty, roughly 30,000 to 80,000 miles. Because the LEDs are built into the headlamp, dealers replace the whole assembly, and owners report costs above $2000 per side. The lights go dim, turn blue, or go dark, and owners say they see many other trucks with the same uneven lights. Several note there is no recall or service bulletin.

  • Brakes483 crashes

The brake pedal sinks to the floor as a burst of warnings appears: ABS, AdvanceTrac, pre-collision assist, and brake system lights. Several cases happen in the first few thousand miles, and some come back after a brake booster replacement or software update. Three reports involve crashes, including one where the truck rolled while in park, tied to recall 21S56. Other complaints cover a hard pedal at speed, rear brakes locking with a parking brake message, ABS pump failure, trailer brake module loss, and a front brake line rubbing against the tire.

  • Engine40No crashes

Oil disappears fast or the engine fails outright. The 5.0L V8 can burn 1-2 quarts every 1,200 to 1,500 miles, and TSB 19-2365 did not cure it in reported cases. Several 2.7 EcoBoost engines seized or quit, some at very low mileage, and one failure is linked by its owner to the intake valve recall. Other reports cover a cracked high-pressure fuel injector spraying gas, Raptor misfires while waiting on a recall fix, stalling, and a burning odor before a no-start. Recall diagnosis delays and denied coverage also draw complaints.

  • Steering371 crash

Power steering assist cuts out suddenly, sometimes at highway speed and sometimes during low-speed turns or while backing up. Steering assist fault messages often appear along with AdvanceTrac and pre-collision warnings. Some trucks recover after a restart. Others need a new power steering control module or rack, and the module has been back-ordered. One rack failed after the truck drove through a shallow puddle. A front differential failure caused grinding, loss of steering control, and fire. A drivetrain recall case with a part shortage ended in a minor crash.

  • Airbags43 crashes

Front and side crashes end in injuries with no air bag deployment. Three of the four complaints describe this: a frontal hit from a reversing pickup, a high-speed guard rail strike with a rollover, and a side impact that crushed the passenger side. The remaining report covers a defective clock spring in the steering column that a dealer confirmed needs replacement, on a truck that Ford says falls outside the current clock spring recall.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints F-150 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
The bolt that holds the left side rear wheel to the axle sheered off. This was discovered when the vehicle had 9,200 miles on it. When the wheel was removed the sheered bolt and washer fell out. Based on the condition of the bolt it was apparent that the bolt had been sheered off for quite some time. This truck has not been off road nor has it been used to pull a trailer yet. The truck is a 2021 Ford F150 Powerboost truck Platinum edition.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Transmission
Truck has 30,129 miles driven. As car shifted into gear to drive, it suddenly went into neutral gear while driving. This was following a loud bang like sound followed by a rough shift into neutral. Truck eventually shifted back into gear. Truck has been at dealership for about a month, waiting for parts to repair/replace the transmission. Dealer service provider stated that this was a manufacturing problem.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2023

Wipers and visibility
Tow mirrors were provided by ford OEM ML3Z17696CA The side marker lights will not function on the new 2021 models due to inability to program them. Ford dealerships do not know how to program them. They said there is no official documentation on how to do this. This is a safety concern as these are large tow mirrors that extend far out on the sides of the vehicle. At night they require side marker lights.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2021

Electrical
Deafening pulsing noise coming from all speakers , volume button did not turn it off. Shut truck and locked it and did not stop the noise. Unplugged battery and did not stop noise. After about 15 minutes it stopped. Got into truck and there was an electrical burning smell. I have recorded the noise on video. Big safety concern, if the noise happened while I was moving I might have crashed. My ears were ringing for awhile after the incident.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Electrical
When towing a trailer with trailer brakes, the trailer brakes are tested and confirmed to be working at the beginning of the journey, but at some point during the journey, the trailer brakes will stop working with no indication compromising my stopping ability. This issues has occurred multiple time and can confirm there are no problems with the trailer brakes themselves. This same issue is being reported by multiple other 2021 F150 owners.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2021

Exterior lights
Driver side LED DRL light has failed. This is a common problem occuring with many people with 2021+ year models of the Ford F-150. Truck is barely outside of warranty and with 51,000 miles and should not have a failing LED DRL. Additionally, Ford has made this part unrepairable and according to the dealership closest to me will require a full headlight assembly replacement.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Exterior lights
Both daytime running lights, which also serve as part of the headlights have burnt out. First the drivers side vertical strip of the LED light went out, then the passenger side same vertical strip only. Recently, the horizontal top strip of the headlight went out too. Just happened around 30,000 miles, little past 3 years since I bought my truck

Where the 2021 fits in the F-150's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the first model year of the F-150's 14th generation (2021 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Ford fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
