Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2023 BMW 4 Series. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Your inspection sheet

Tick items off on your phone at the car, or print it. Ticks stay on this device.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Reported on other 4 Series years with the same design

These years share the 2023's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

2022 4 Series

36 owner complaints
  • Electrical 10
  • Transmission 6
  • Airbags 4

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls and ask a dealer whether remedy parts are actually in stock.
  • Start the car cold several times; walk away from slow or repeated cranking, burning smells, or smoke.
  • Drive at highway speed and watch for Drive Train Malfunction or Reduced Power messages or a shift to neutral.

  • Engine 13
  • Airbags 6

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls and get dealer records showing any fire-risk recall repair was completed.
  • After the test drive, check the coolant level and look under the engine for leaks near the oil filter housing.
  • Ask for records of heat management module or oil filter housing replacement and any coolant leak repairs.

Which 4 Series is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 BMW 4 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, RWD27–28 mpg
3.0L 6-cylGasAWD, RWD18–19 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybridAWD, RWD25–27 mpg
  • The 2023 BMW 4 Series was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 4 Series that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 BMW 4 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes122 crashes

Brake assist fades, the pedal goes stiff or sinks halfway, and the car does not stop as expected. Some reports describe a pedal that grabs, releases and grabs again, with a braking system failure message on the dash. Others describe automatic emergency braking slowing the car hard at moderate speed for no reason. Two filings involve crashes, one with injuries. Many of these complaints come from 7 Series owners still waiting on a recall repair because parts are unavailable. A few say dealer repairs did not fix uneven pedal pressure.

  • Stability control5No crashes

Brake system faults cause sudden stops at low speed without the pedal pressed, or leave the pedal on the floor, along with a "Drive Carefully" brake message and warning lights. One failure happened at 6,470 miles. Most filings here report no failure, though. They describe owners waiting for a recall repair while dealers confirm parts are unavailable. Every complaint in this group names a 7 Series model, not a 4 Series, so these reports point to a BMW brake problem without describing this car directly.

  • Electrical3No crashes

The car shuts off completely while moving, with all electrical power lost. On some highway drives this comes with warnings that the airbags and seat belts are not working. Another report describes a dashboard that gets too hot to touch every day, which brings up a warning that the safety sensors may not be working. A third complaint, about a 330e, says the instrument cluster is too dim in bright daylight and has no manual brightness control. No crashes are reported here.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

Rear cross-traffic alert often fails to beep or brake when another car approaches from behind, even on its most sensitive setting. One owner says it rarely triggers unless the other car is very close. Dealers in more than one state say the system works as designed and offer no fix. One owner says a relative's 2023 440i does the same thing. Other complaints say the backup camera is too dim to use at night or in parking garages. No crashes are reported.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The gear shifter moves out of Drive into neutral with a light brush of the arm, and the car stops pulling while traffic speeds up around it. Dealers call this acceptable. In another case, a gear malfunction warning disabled the car, and it could not be shifted to neutral for towing. The service advisor blamed water from the cup holder getting into the controller. One dealer-confirmed failure involves the rear differential breaking inside and the rear axle separating from it, which risks loss of control.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Unwanted lunges forward make up both reports in this group, and neither involves a 4 Series. In one, a foot slips from the brake onto the accelerator because the pedals sit close together, and the car drives through a garage wall. In the other, a harsh jerk on the shift from first to second feels like unintended acceleration. That owner reports near-collisions and neck pain, while the dealer calls it normal. One filing involves a crash and one reports an injury.

  • Body and structure21 crash

Unexpected acceleration when the brake is pressed leads to one crash in this group. It happened at very low speed and damaged a neighbor's property after an earlier episode on a downhill road. The other complaint describes the front license plate holder falling off the bumper while the car was parked, with no outside force, and damaging the bumper. Only two complaints are filed here, so no wider pattern is visible.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 4 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
I have this model 2023 with about 6000 miles which makes a noise when in reverse. I have the same model year 2021 which has 25000 miles. The dealer states the brakes and rotors may have issues on the 25000 . If this occurs on a same model type two years apart and 19000 mile difference this is questionable. I have also had failure on the I drive system for frontal crash warning on 2023 not repaired after documenting it failed twice.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

BrakesCrash reported
Car did not fully stop when brakes engaged. Caused collision with a wall. Mechanics are currently evaluating the braking system but it appears to be consistent with the brake recall issued for other 2023-4 BMW vehicles—loss of power brake assist or antilock brake to not function properly. (See National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Campaign Number 24V-104 reported on February 12, 2024).

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
The dash board becomes so hot that it is too hot to touch the dash board and when this happens all the safety equipment stops working and shows warning on dash that has to be acknowledged and close message. The warning says that some or all safety equipment may or may not be working properly and shows a picture of all sensors with an X through them. This happens on a daily basses
