Which 4 Series is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 BMW 4 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

3.0L 6-cylGasAWD, RWD18–19 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybridAWD, RWD26–28 mpg
  • The 2022 BMW 4 Series was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 4 Series that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 BMW 4 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical102 crashes

Starter trouble dominates these filings: slow or repeated cranking, a burning odor, smoke from the engine bay, and one stall at 5 mph. Most of these reports are really about recall repair delays, with owners waiting months for parts and getting no date. Two crash reports with injuries describe sudden full-throttle acceleration in parking lots. Other reports cover windows and the sunroof opening on their own, and a spilled drink shorting the gear selector. Many of these filings name other BMW models, such as the 740Li and 840i.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Sudden loss of drive is the main pattern. The car shows "Drive Train Malfunction" and "Reduced Power" at speed, or slips into neutral around 18,000 miles, and dealers often cannot find a cause. A rear axle joint broke at 1,645 miles and left one car unable to move. In another case, a leaking rear differential needed full replacement just after the warranty ran out. One owner describes the car jumping back into Park when a door is ajar. Losing power in traffic is the main safety risk.

  • Airbags41 crash

Deployment goes wrong in both directions: bags stay off in a real crash or fire with no impact at all. One crash report says the side airbags did not deploy in a side impact that knocked a rear passenger unconscious. Another describes every airbag going off over a bump at 25 mph, cracking the windshield and injuring both occupants. Others report a Passenger Restraint service message, possibly linked to a seat sensor. All 4 filings involve serious safety concerns, and two report injuries.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

Sidewalls split with no road hazard. Two reports describe a tire blowing out at 75 mph on the highway, dropping to zero pressure and causing a partial loss of steering control. A third owner found a gash in a parked car's tire with no warning light. The size named is P225/45R18, and the cuts are 2.5 to 6 inches long, sometimes on the inner sidewall. Owners paid for the replacement or the labor.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

Reversing aids drop out or miss hazards. The rear camera image can disappear when park assist is switched off, even while backing up. Parking sensors and the backup camera fail on and off, and dealers blame minor sensor damage. Rear cross-traffic alert fails to warn of approaching cars and only reacts to objects directly behind. One owner reports a near crash and says BMW acknowledged the problem but had no fix.

  • Lane keeping3No crashes

Driver-assist systems stop working or act on their own. Forward collision warning, pedestrian warning, active blind spot detection and parking collision warning are reported as not working. In one case, parking assist slams on the brakes while the car is moving, causing near collisions. Sensors fail easily, even on low-mileage cars, and owners are asked to pay for repairs. One report also describes the built-in cellular service failing and GPS positions that are miles off.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 4 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
In September 2025, BMW issued a recall # 25V644 for a safety related potential fire issue on the starter for my 2022 840i Gran Coupe. It has now been 4 months, and BMW is still telling me they do not have the assigned parts to resolve this issue. Furthermore, NHTSA has somehow dropped this recall off the records for the VIN of my car, which is troubling. My compliant is BMW is not timely in their efforts to correct a safety fire issue for my vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
car had 1,645 miles rear left axle broke. Car would not move. Had this occurred on a highway I easily could have been rear ended. Part must have been defective, Dealer replaced the part left rear CV joint but not the right, nor did the dealer confirm both rear axles were not from the same batch. The failure was catastrophic and sudden with no warnings.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Airbags
Passenger Restraint service message. Possibly related to airbag seat or floor sensor. Checked BMW customer forums and appears to be widespread issue.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Wheels and tires
Approached my parked car and noticed a 2.5-inch gash in the sidewall of the tire. No warning light in dashboard. Tire pressure remained at recommended pressure. Previous driving was on 35 mph local roads with optimal driving conditions--clear weather and no road hazards. Drove vehicle to dealer to have tire replaced. Tire was covered under warranty but incurred labor expenses. (P225/45R18)

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Wheels and tires
Driving at 75 mph on highway, tire "exploded". Tire air pressure immediately dropped to zero, resulting in some lack of steering control. Warning message on dash appeared upon tire failure. Drove with caution lights to open gas station. A 4-inch slash was visible in the sidewall of the tire. Car was towed to dealership and tire was replaced at my expense.
