Which 4 Series is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 BMW 4 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2020 BMW 4 Series was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 4 Series that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 BMW 4 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical171 crash

Most complaints in this category are about waiting for a recall repair, not about a breakdown. Owners say they were warned of a fire risk from the engine starter while the car is parked and told to park outside, away from buildings. They report that dealers have no parts, no timeline and no loaner cars, sometimes for months. A smaller group reports a failed heat management module that puts the car into reduced-power mode at highway speed. Others describe over-the-air software updates that won't install and blind spot warnings that never alert. One crash report describes a parked car starting on its own and hitting a garage door.

  • Engine13No crashes

Coolant leaks are the main pattern. Dealers trace them to the heat management module, the oil filter housing and its gasket, and hoses, and one dealer called the problem common. Some owners lose coolant in seconds with no warning and need a tow. One car caught fire while idling with the heater on and was totaled. Other reports describe an oil pump failure at 38,000 miles that shut the engine down, motor mounts that collapse and cause shuddering, and failed active grille shutter motors that turn on the check engine light.

Coolant loss leads to overheating. Drivers see a low coolant light with an engine overheating message, find coolant leaking under the engine, and in one case the engine stalled. A cracked expansion tank leaked onto the fuel rail, and an injector failed, at about 48,000 miles. In another case the dealer couldn't find where the coolant was leaking. Repairs range from replacing the tank and injector to a long list of hoses, seals and gaskets.

  • Airbags63 crashes

These complaints fall into two groups. In the first, airbags don't deploy in serious side-impact crashes. This group includes 3 crashes and 6 injuries, among them a driver trapped behind a jammed door. In the second, a passenger restraint warning comes on even though the car has never been in an accident. That warning means the front passenger airbag may not work. Owners blame the passenger seat's wiring harness or pressure sensor. One dealer quoted $2700 for the repair, and some owners stop carrying front passengers until it is fixed.

  • Brakes31 crash

The car fails to stop when the brake pedal is pressed, usually at low speed and often with no warning light. One case ended in a rear-end crash that injured both drivers, and the dealer found nothing wrong even though the problem came back. Another car needed a new brake booster at about 86,000 miles. In a third, the car suddenly slowed almost to a stop with several warning lights on, and a mechanic blamed the integrated braking system.

  • Suspension31 crash

A front tie rod buckles while backing into a parking space at under 5 mph, with no impact, and two technicians find no sign of a collision. In another report, a system locks up at highway speed after a dealer repair, sending the car off an exit ramp and causing a back injury. A third complaint blames possible damage from a tow truck. These few reports share no common cause.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Injury reports here involve trim and hardware, not crash structure. Aluminum trim on the center console peels away near the lid button, leaves a sharp edge and cuts fingers. One person was hurt reaching through the grille for the secondary hood latch. Another buyer got warning lights and side-to-side sway soon after purchase and then learned the car had earlier accident damage to a structural safety part. That points to the car's history, not its design.

  • Steering31 crash

The serious reports describe a sudden shutdown while driving. Power steering assist cuts out and the engine switches off. In one case the car crashed and was totaled. Another owner lost all engine and electrical power in busy traffic with no warning lights. One complaint filed here is really about the open fire-risk recall, with the owner waiting months for a response and unsure whether an independent mechanic can work on the car.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Headlight housings fog up in the rain, scatter the low beams and light only 15 to 30 feet of road. One report puts this at about 34,000 miles. Dealers say they can't confirm it because the lenses are clear by the time the car arrives. Other owners point out that the instrument cluster has no low-beam indicator, so the daytime running lights can be mistaken for headlights, and that the cluster's auto-dimming makes it hard to read in daylight.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 4 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Car manufacturer (BMW) has had a recall (ID 25V636000) for over two months. It requires parking the vehicle outside away from overhanging trees, because of risk of fire. BMW knows what the fix is (replace the starter motor) but has not begun recalling vehicles. Please compel BMW to perform the repair/replacement.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Over time, the wiring harness going to the knee air bag(s) can rub against the metal support tubes for the instrument panel, chafing and damaging the wiring. SIB 65 20 22

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Engine
Engine coolant leaking and took it to BMW dealer. Was advised that the issue was a oil filter housing gasket, heating control module and hose. Was advised by the Dealer that it was a common issue and happens all the time

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Engine
Error in vehicle computer software causing check engine light to show error in active grill position sensor, could lead to engine not properly cooling. Manufacturer error.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

AirbagsCrash reported
Car was t-boned by another vehicle at 65-70 MPH (other driver was cited as negligent and responsible for accident)—and other driver’s car caused damage to the BMW and driver (my daughter) due to the side airbags on the BMW not deploying (damage to daughter would have been significantly less had the BMW side airbags deployed as they should have upon impact).

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Airbags
Passenger safety restraint system warning occurred. meaning passenger air bag is not effective. Upon searching internet for the problem I realized this has been a common issue with BMW's for years. It is a very expensive fix and is a safety hazard. My dealership wants $2700 to fix the pressure sensor in the passenger seat. Until I can get this fixed I am not going to transport any passengers in the front seat, just to be safe.
