Reported on other 2 Series years with the same design

These years share the 2023's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

2022 2 Series

35 owner complaints
  • Electrical 10
  • Transmission 6
  • Airbags 4

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Run the VIN through federal recall records and get dealer proof that every open recall repair is finished.
  • On a cold start, listen for slow or repeated cranking and smell for burning near the engine bay.
  • Drive at 50 to 60 mph and watch for Drive Train Malfunction or Reduced Power messages, or slipping into neutral.

2021 2 Series

70 owner complaints
  • Electrical 16
  • Brakes 5
  • Airbags 4

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls and ask a BMW dealer whether remedy parts are actually available.
  • Idle in park and feel for abnormal shaking, then listen for clunks or pulling sounds at startup.
  • Start the car cold and press the brake pedal; a hard pedal with little assist means lost brake boost.

Which 2 Series is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 BMW 2 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD, RWD28–29 mpg
3.0L 6-cylAWD, RWD26 mpg
  • The 2023 BMW 2 Series was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 2 Series that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 BMW 2 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes122 crashes

Brake assist drops out or the pedal behaves erratically. It loses pressure halfway down, goes stiff, or must be pushed to the floor, sometimes with a braking system failure message. Other reports describe automatic emergency braking slamming on at moderate speed with nothing ahead. Two complaints involve crashes, and two people were hurt. Several filings come from owners waiting on a brake recall repair because parts are unavailable, and most of them report no failure. Most excerpts name other 2023 BMW models, such as the 740i, 760i, and 330e, not the 2-Series.

  • Stability control5No crashes

Brakes apply on their own or the pedal sinks to the floor. Reports include a sudden stop at about 10 mph with no pedal input and a brake system warning, and a pedal failure at 6,470 miles that the dealer did not repair. Most filings, though, come from owners who were told about a brake and stability control recall but cannot get the repair because parts are unavailable. No crashes are reported. All five excerpts name the 740i or 760i, not the 2-Series.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Complete power loss while moving is the most serious report. All electrical power drops out, and warnings say the airbags and seat belts are not working. This has happened repeatedly at highway speed. Another complaint describes the dash getting too hot to touch every day, followed by a warning that safety sensors may not be working. A third concerns an instrument cluster too dim to read in bright daylight, with no manual brightness control. No crashes are reported.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

Rear cross-traffic alert fails to warn or brake for approaching cars during backing. Owners describe repeat dealer visits that end with the system declared to work as designed, even at the most sensitive and loudest settings. Reports say it reacts only when another car is very close, if at all. The backup camera is also described as nearly useless at night and in dim parking garages. No crashes are reported.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Drive engagement can drop out without warning. In one report a light brush knocks the shifter into neutral, so the car stops accelerating in traffic, and the dealer called this acceptable. In another, a gear malfunction message disabled the car and it had to be towed. A service advisor blamed water from the cup holder area reaching the controller. A dealer also confirmed a rear differential that failed internally and let the left rear axle separate. No crashes are reported.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Unexpected surges forward are the theme. One complaint blames pedals set too close together, so a foot slipped from brake to accelerator and the car crashed through a garage wall. Another describes a hard jerk forward on the shift from first to second that the dealer called normal, with one injury reported. Both filings name other BMW models, a 525i and a 2021 530e, not the 2-Series.

  • Body and structure21 crash

Acceleration when the brake is pressed appears in one crash report. It first happened on a downhill and later at very low speed, when the car hit a neighbor's property and spent about a month in a body shop. The other complaint describes the front license plate holder coming off the bumper while the car was parked, with no outside force, and damaging the bumper. One complaint involves a crash.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 2 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
I have this model 2023 with about 6000 miles which makes a noise when in reverse. I have the same model year 2021 which has 25000 miles. The dealer states the brakes and rotors may have issues on the 25000 . If this occurs on a same model type two years apart and 19000 mile difference this is questionable. I have also had failure on the I drive system for frontal crash warning on 2023 not repaired after documenting it failed twice.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

BrakesCrash reported
Car did not fully stop when brakes engaged. Caused collision with a wall. Mechanics are currently evaluating the braking system but it appears to be consistent with the brake recall issued for other 2023-4 BMW vehicles—loss of power brake assist or antilock brake to not function properly. (See National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Campaign Number 24V-104 reported on February 12, 2024).

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
The dash board becomes so hot that it is too hot to touch the dash board and when this happens all the safety equipment stops working and shows warning on dash that has to be acknowledged and close message. The warning says that some or all safety equipment may or may not be working properly and shows a picture of all sensors with an X through them. This happens on a daily basses
