Which 2 Series is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 BMW 2 Series. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, RWD | 27–28 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cyl | AWD, RWD | 24 mpg |
- The 2018 BMW 2 Series was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 2 Series that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Coolant hose and housing leaks
49,000–53,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 BMW 2 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine39No crashes
Coolant loss is the core problem. A low-coolant warning appears, often with little advance notice, followed by overheating, limp mode, or a sudden loss of power. Dealers commonly blame a cracked oil filter housing, a leaking coolant pump, or brittle plastic hoses, with housing failures reported around 53,000 miles. Some cars need a new engine after overheating. Other reports cite failed rod bearings and rocks puncturing the radiator. Three filings describe smoke or fire in the engine compartment, including one that started right after shutdown.
Leaking hoses, reservoir hoses, and water pumps trigger low-coolant warnings, overheating, reduced power, and stalling while driving. Some cars need a second water pump after the first replacement, and one report describes smoke under the hood and inside the cabin. Reported coolant failures range from 49,000 to 105,000 miles. Leaks from oil cooler lines and turbo lines that contaminate the coolant also appear. Several owners say the manufacturer offered no help with the repair.
Airbags383 crashes
A recurring "Passenger restraint system malfunction" warning dominates these reports. Dealers trace it to a failed passenger seat occupancy sensor mat, which can keep the passenger airbag from deploying. Some owners also see the passenger belt warning triggered by a wallet or other light object, and a few report driver-seat sensor failures as well. Repairs are often outside warranty and are quoted at over $2,000. In 3 separate crash reports, the airbags did not deploy in front, rear, and animal-strike impacts. The category lists 5 injuries in total.
Electrical262 crashes
Fire is the most serious pattern. Two reports describe smoke and flames from the rear window defroster wiring near the back seat and C-pillar. Other filings cover a sudden total power loss with steering failure at low mileage, and doors, windows, and the sunroof operating on their own along with gear shift error messages. Plug-in hybrid owners report a burned-out charging module and poor battery range. Water leaking into the roof antenna is blamed for emergency call faults, and some cars have wiring chewed by rodents.
Seat belts141 crash
False warnings lead this category. The "Passenger restraint system malfunction" message appears at startup or at random, and seat belt chimes sound when the seat is empty or the driver is already buckled. Dealers point to the passenger seat sensor mat, with quotes from over $2,000 up to $2,800, and some warnings return after a warranty repair. Mechanical faults appear too: driver belts that will not retract, a rear buckle that will not latch, and a passenger belt that locked and unlocked repeatedly during a crash.
Transmission82 crashes
Stalling and power loss lead this category. Cars shut off at highway speed or when coming to a stop, sometimes showing "Drivetrain malfunction" or "transmission not in park" messages. Diagnoses include a failed fuel pump and fuel rail line, a VANOS fault after a rough cold start, and coolant leaks that cause jerking. A cracked driveshaft flex disc turns up at 22,000 miles. In one crash, the car accelerated from a stop while the drivetrain warning flashed, and the driver suffered a fractured back.
Seats52 crashes
Seat faults range from distracting to dangerous. The passenger seat occupancy sensor fails and triggers restraint system warnings, with one repair quoted at $2,030. Moisture is sometimes blamed even when the cushion shows no sign of it. The driver seat is reported to slide under braking, and in one low-speed reverse crash it collapsed backward, leading to serious neck injuries. The lumbar support can also inflate on its own while driving, with no warning to the driver.
Body and structure51 crash
Two failures stand out. The front passenger door opens by itself while the car is moving, at times with no warning until it swings open, and it can happen more than once on the same car. The sunroof glass shatters on its own at speed with a loud bang, leaving shards on top of the shade. The remaining report concerns collision damage from another vehicle, not a defect.
Acceleration and cruise control42 crashes
Sudden unintended acceleration appears in two crash reports, one of them while the driver was pulling into a parking space. A cruise control rocker switch can stick, which keeps raising the speed and in one case pushed it past 80 mph. The remaining report involves a run-flat tire blowout on the freeway with severe vibration, pulling, and grinding that ended in a tow.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints 2 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My BMW 430i 2018showed no warning and suddenly the car started to shake, I stopped immediately and after the car cooled, there was no coolant, the oil temperature gage was always on normal. The car overheated and caused catastrophic engine failure, and need replacement. Upon inspection by several mechanics, its obvious the coolant leak from a hose that connects with engine block

The vehicle gave a warning that the engine coolant was low and to power down before it overheated. Upon taking it to the dealer, it was discovered that the oil housing unit was defective. After doing online research, this is a very common issue with this part. I had a previous vehicle with a similar issue that caused the vehicle to shut down in traffic from overheating.

Vehicle reports "Passenger restraint system malfunction" upon startup, even when passenger is not in seat. Passenger airbag light turns on. In this state the vehicle defaults to deploying the passenger airbag no matter what, even if passenger weighs less than 45 lbs. BMW of North Scottsdale inspected and recommends replacing the passenger seat sensor mat for $3600, not covered outside of factory warranty.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2022
The Passenger Restraint System Malfunction warning light comes on randomly. Also the passenger side seat belt light comes on even if I put my wallet or something very light on the seat. I previously replaced the driver side seat sensor because the restraint system error was coming on. It seems odd that this critical component would fail in both seats by year six.

KLE MODULE FAILURE - Causing short on EV Hard Wires Wall Charger. Module Burned out on vehicle, which could cause fire and electrical problems. This failure also causes problems with emissions issues as this is a Hybrid Vehicle. BMW has has several issues with this and advising that it is not a covered part in the 2018 module, but has been covered and repaired in 2019 + Vehicles.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2023
Digital display cluster suddenly started flickering and had a shifting image moving incorrectly to the left. It made reading the electronic speedometer and other gauges impossible and highly unsafe while driving on highway. There was no way to safely determine speed or vehicle. The display did not recover after parking the car and restarting engine.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2024
Constantly pops up a message for passenger restraint system malfunction. I had an accident where I swerved off the road into a ditch at about 60 mph. I the driver was not hurt and the passenger wouldn’t have been hurt either if it was for the passenger seat belt not locking correctly at first and then repeatedly locking and unlocking the entire time hurting his chest.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
The passenger seat is a mess. There are two issues that repeatedly happen on this car. One - there is false passenger seatbelt warning and two their is a passenger restraint system malfunction message. I took this to the BMW dealership and they said it requires a sensor mat replacement that costs over $2000. I looked it up online and found many people have had the exact same issue with this car.
