Which Sienna is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Toyota Sienna. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD35–36 mpg
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sienna that averages well under the EPA 35 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Toyota Sienna, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Seats92No crashes

Second-row seat rails were built with improper welds that may lose structural integrity in certain high-speed crashes. Nearly every report is about the recall (NHTSA 25V668000, Toyota 25TA12) and the wait for a fix, not about seats that actually broke. Toyota tells owners not to seat anyone or install child seats in the second row until the repair is done. For months, parts were unavailable and there was no repair date. Some vans sit at dealers, and loaner cars are often unavailable or have fewer seats. A few owners also report seats that rattle.

  • Wipers and visibility14No crashes

The driver-side exterior mirror vibrates and wobbles. The image blurs, and following cars appear to shake, which makes it hard to judge distance when changing lanes. It shows up on bumpy roads and gets worse at highway speeds and at night. Some drivers report nausea or dizziness. The passenger mirror is fine. Replacing the mirror often doesn't help, and Toyota has denied warranty claims and called the condition normal. One report describes the sunroof glass shattering at 65 mph with 275 miles on the van.

The driver-side exterior mirror shakes at highway speeds and over bumps, while the passenger mirror stays steady. The shaking can make the mirror useless for seeing cars behind and can cause dizziness. Dealers acknowledge the problem is common, but replacing the mirror has not reliably fixed it. Separately, in light rain, water drips from the liftgate handle trim onto the backup camera lens and blocks the view. With the rear entertainment screen folded down, it blocks the view through the interior rearview mirror.

  • Body and structure9No crashes

Liftgate misalignment is the main hardware complaint. The gate sits unevenly, leaving a gap of about ¼-inch on one side. It creaks while moving and gets harder to open by hand, by power, or with the hands-free sensor. Owners report scratched latches and worry that a worn latch could let the gate open. Dealers often confirm the misalignment but decline to fix it. Most of the other complaints are about the second-row seat rail recall, including buyback demands and lower trade-in offers while no remedy exists.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

Second-row seat belts stop working, leaving that seat unusable. In one case a belt jammed and would not retract at 1300 miles. In another, the buckle would not latch and set off the seat belt sensor. Neither report links the failure to a crash or unusual event. Fixes can be slow, and replacement parts were still pending in at least one case. Only two complaints are on file, so this is not yet a clear pattern.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sienna owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Seats
Recall 25TA12 for a 2025 Sienna Van second rows seats rail welds is not being handled in a timely manner by Toyota. I received a notice on Oct 5, 2025 about this recall and 90 days later there still isn’t a remedy by Toyota. This is unacceptable as Toyota put the owners on notice by saying not to use the second row seats as injuries may happen due to improperly welded seat rails. Toyota needs to step up and get this recall completed now.

Seats
NHTSA Recall No. 25V668 with report date 10/7/25 provided notice that 2nd row seats were deemed unsafe to use by Toyota. We bought this vehicle specifically to be able to use the 2nd and 3rd row seats for our family. Over 3 months later, Toyota still has not provided any update on when remedy will be available for this safety recall. When will they have the remedy available?

Wipers and visibility
The drivers side mirror vibrates causing distortion that makes it difficult to judge distances on highways. This issue seems to be a structural defect in the door not the mirror. Multiple people are complaining about this. Many have had the mirror replaced only to still experience the issue myself included. I have test drove two brand new 2025 Sienna and the issue was present there as well. It is very much a safety issue.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Wipers and visibility
Driver side wing mirror vibrates at low speeds and worsens at highway speeds greatly affecting rear visibility. Passenger side has no vibration but drivers side is so severe it's difficult to make out anything in the mirror image.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Body and structure
Open recall with no anticipated date of being fixed. The second row seats are unsafe for passengers which makes the vehicle unusable for a family.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Seat belts
Relatively new Toyota Sienna, bought 6 weeks ago and currently at 1300 miles. Passenger side 2nd row seat belt inexplicably became stuck and would not retract, making that seat unusable as the seat belt was no longer able to safely restrain a passenger. No accidents or unusual incidents were noted. This was completely unexpected and random following a routine short-distance errand.
