Reported on other Sienna years with the same design

These years share the 2020's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

41 owner complaints
  • Fuel system 11
  • Body and structure 5
  • Transmission 5

Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Run the VIN through federal recall records and confirm fuel pump campaign 20V012000 was completed.
  • Pull away gently from a stop to 25 mph several times and feel for hesitation, lurching, or gear hunting.
  • Drive at highway speed with the radio off and listen for transmission whine. Ask for any transmission replacement records.

2018 Sienna

66 owner complaints
  • Transmission 15
  • Fuel system 11
  • Electrical 6

Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Accelerate up a hill and onto a highway; listen for transmission whine and feel for a delayed, abrupt downshift.
  • Have a Toyota dealer check the VIN for completed fuel pump recall work and transmission customer support program eligibility.
  • After the test drive, smell for gasoline and look under the van for fuel leaks.

Which Sienna is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Toyota Sienna. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–21 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sienna that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Automatic transmission failure

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Toyota Sienna, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Transmission failure dominates these reports. Symptoms include refusing to shift, erratic acceleration, shuddering, rough running through the lower gears and a whining noise. Two complete failures arrive at about 70,900 and 85,000 miles. One had metal pieces broken off inside, and both ended with the transmission being replaced. Some failures come with no warning light or code. Others start with a check engine light or a traction control warning, and then the van barely moves. Losing drive in traffic is the main risk. A separate report describes a front axle assembly coming apart internally and leaking fluid.

  • Fuel system6No crashes

Delayed fuel pump recall repairs make up most of these reports. The recall covers a low pressure fuel pump that may stop working, and the notice warns of an increased crash risk. Owners describe recall notices with no parts available and months without a fix, and one fleet van is parked until the repair is done. One separate complaint describes hesitation, rough idle and revving while parked. It ends with a van that shakes, will not accelerate and needs a tow. A $725 fuel flush and injection cleaning does not cure it.

Stalling and jerking linked to fuel pump recall campaign 20V682000 fill this category. In one report the van stalls briefly at highway speed with several warning lights on. It stalls again a year after the recall replaced the pump, and the dealer cannot duplicate the problem. Another van jerks and lunges forward under throttle at about 4,000 miles while recall parts are still unavailable. Stalling at highway speed carries a real crash risk.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Random electrical faults and warning lights make up this category. Pre-collision, lane assist and airbag warnings come back after a fuse is replaced, and the real fix is a wiring harness that is on backorder. Other reports describe blinkers turning on by themselves, radio volume changing during turns, CarPlay cutting in and out, and a brief, ear-piercing screech from the speakers. A key remote stops working, and an AWD malfunction message switches the van to 2WD mode. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Most of these complaints involve the sliding doors. A power sliding door cable binds and jams the rear door shut, and turning off the power door system does not free it. The owner notes that a federal bulletin on this issue came out in 6/2019, before the van was built. A rusted fuel door hinge breaks and keeps the rear passenger door from opening automatically. One report describes a locked rear passenger door unlocking and opening by itself overnight with no warning.

  • Steering3No crashes

Sudden loss of power steering assist is the main pattern. It sometimes comes with stability control, pre-collision and lane departure warnings. In one case, replacing the rack and pinion does not fix it. The owner links the fault to steering recall campaign 19V532000, but the dealer shows no open recall on that VIN. Another report describes heavy steering at 55 mph with no warning light at about 6,200 miles. A third is mostly a loss of acceleration on the highway, with the engine, traction and steering lights all on.

  • Brakes2No crashes

Skidding during braking, with the ABS light on, is the serious report here. It happens during a slow turn at about 28,000 miles, along with an abnormal sound. The dealer finds a shorted front passenger side speed sensor and a fractured brake actuator. The van goes unrepaired because parts are not available. The only other complaint is about design: a narrow brake pedal that the driver sometimes has trouble finding with a foot, losing a second or two.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sienna owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Car has about 16,000 miles. When accelerating slowly from a stop, vehicle hesitates, shakes, and runs rough as it slowly progresses thru first, second, & third gears. After transmission gets in fourth gear, hesitation and roughness goes away. This issue is rapidly getting worse.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Fuel system
The van has been periodically hesitating, rough idles, and when parked the rpm revs. On 9/13/22, the van was shaking, hesitating, and would not accelerate. It was undrivable and had to be towed. We took it to Toyota of Irving where they charged us $725 to flush the gas and clean the fuel injection system. Despite this, it is still hard idling and hesitating.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2022

Electrical
Speakers make an ear piercing loud noise that lasts about a second. If this sound were to occur during travel, could cause distraction leading to harm, or with young kids in the car, possibly damage their ears. This problem has been random and not experienced by a dealership. No warning messages or symptoms to the problem. Problem first appeared 6 months ago.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Electrical
Spontaneous and random: Blinkers come on, radio volume goes up or down when turning the other way, CarPlay USB shuts off and on, hiccups when accelerating (when ECO kicks on/in)…everything points to an electrical/computer issue. Purchased used from a dealership and noticed these issues after the 3-day return window.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Body and structure
The passenger side rear door unlocked and opened by itself in the middle of the night, no warning messages were given previously, doors were locked that night. Keys were not accidentally pressed on. It seems that others have had similar problems with Toyota Siennas in the past as well.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Body and structure
Hinge rust on fuel door causing it to break and not let rear passenger door auto open (because switch won't make up) hinge is very weakly built

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
