Which Sienna is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Sienna. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sienna that averages well under the EPA 35 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Sienna, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes91 crash

Brakes briefly let go during light, steady pedal pressure, and the van lurches forward until the driver presses much harder. It happens most when rolling to a stop at low speed or braking downhill, with no warning lights. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. Toyota issued TSB 4724 to reprogram the brake actuator, but at least one owner says the fix lasted only about 3 months. One crash with 2 injuries involves a van that would not stop. Separate complaints say the pedal needs heavy pressure in normal stops.

  • Acceleration and cruise control41 crash

Surging at very low speeds is the main complaint. The van pushes forward while the driver is braking for a stop or creeping through a parking lot, and it takes harder braking to stop it. No warnings appear. One crash involves hard acceleration from about 10 mph that ended with the van hitting a pole. In a different pattern, the van gives no throttle response while crossing traffic, possibly because the forward collision system cuts power, and it leaves the van sitting in the path of oncoming cars.

  • Body and structure4No crashes

Power doors and the liftgate cause most of these problems. A power sliding door failed to sense a person in its path and pinched them, causing an injury, and the owner says the problem had happened before. Power liftgates screech, stop opening or closing without help, or open by themselves, even while reversing. For one owner this continued for over 18 months despite repeated dealer visits. A liftgate strut also bent and then burst loudly, throwing its spring and metal parts across the driveway.

  • Seats4No crashes

Third-row seats do not stay latched when folded. They bounce up over speed bumps, dips, and firm stops, then land with a thud or sit loose a few inches up. One owner reports a broken cable, and dealers have called the behavior normal. Owners worry the seats or cargo on top of them could fly forward in a crash. Separately, a second-row seat left unlatched on its track slid forward under hard braking and slammed into the driver seat, causing an injury.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

Sidewall bulges and bubbles are the main complaint. In one case several replacement tires bulged within a week, and the new tires that replaced them bulged again, for six affected tires in total. Owners see bulging sidewalls as a blowout risk. One other report describes a low-tire warning that appeared in a parked van at about 17,826 miles. The dealer blamed the weather and made no repair.

  • Engine2No crashes

Power cuts out for 2-3 seconds during city driving, and it returns only after the driver pumps the accelerator several times. The owner reports it happening more than once without a known cause, matching hesitation complaints filed under other components. A second report comes from an owner who needed an engine replacement about three months after purchase. The complaint does not give a clear cause and mostly concerns how replacement hurts resale value.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The accelerator stops responding for 2-3 seconds when pulling out from a stop or turning at low speed. The pedal does nothing at any pressure, then the van suddenly moves. No warning lights come on. Owners call it a serious risk when entering traffic with cars coming. One report places the problem at 68,000 miles, and another owner has had it happen twice since buying the van new. Neither had been diagnosed by a dealer when filed.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The driver-side mirror shakes on bumpy roads and at highway speeds, which blurs the reflection and makes headlights hard to judge at night or in rain. The passenger mirror does not do this. A replacement mirror shook just as badly, and dealers called the movement normal. One owner noticed it by 6500 miles. That same owner reports a wavy distortion across the passenger side of the factory windshield, which the dealer also described as normal.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sienna owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
When I am rolling to a stop, or lightly pressing in the brakes, the car will occasionally jolt forward and I have to slam on the brakes. It is not every time but has happened many times since buying the car new. I brought it into the dealership and they could not replicate it, but it makes me so scared to drive. This could result in an accident or the hitting of a pedestrian. No warning lights.

Brakes
When going down hill while braking, the brakes will release causing the car to lurch forward and then they grab again. It’s intermittent and Toyota has a TSB on it but the dealership with not fix it because they can’t duplicate the problem. It can cause people to take their foot off and of the brake pedal and trying to apply it again. Which can cause someone to rear end another car.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
Looked online to see if other Sienna drivers had the same issue with the hybrid system. Brakes are accelerating a bit even when already pressing on the brakes. It has happened enough times to be concerning. We have not taken it to the dealearship as of yet but will be getting in touch soon , now that we know it's a known issue. No warnings from vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Body and structure
Trunk will not open or close properly. Made a screeching sound when you open or close initially. Then eventually it stops opening or closing unless you assist.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Seats
Rear foldable seats do not lock down into compartment. They bounce up when you stop just a little hard. Cable has already broken when this occurs. Anything laid on top of these seats when folded will be ejected inside of car. Hitting driver in the head. This is very dangerous. Already brought to dealer and complained and nothing was done. They said that's the way it is. Someone will die if this problem is not taken care of.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Seats
The 3rd row seats do not remain stowed when passing over a speed bump or dip in the road. Depending upon the speed of the vehicle, the seats might jump up several inches and almost return to the fully stowed position with a loud thud. The seats then bounce up a few inches from the fully stowed position and remain unsecured. It's possible that the seats might unexpectedly fully open at higher speeds.
