Which Odyssey is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Honda Odyssey. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L 6-cyl | FWD | 22 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Odyssey that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical29No crashes
The engine fails to restart after Auto Idle Stop shuts it off at a light. Drivers release the brake and get a hesitant crank, a rough sputtering restart, or nothing at all, often with the battery light and other warnings on the dash. Many end up stuck in intersections and must shut the van off and restart it, sometimes more than once. Several reports come in under 10,000 miles. Dealers often cannot duplicate the problem. Some replace the starter, and others tell owners to switch the feature off on every drive. Several owners cite federal investigation EA25004.
Engine16No crashes
Stalling at stops after Auto Idle Stop dominates this category. The engine shuts off as designed, then struggles to turn over or will not restart, leaving the van dead at busy intersections. Getting it going can take several button presses, a shift into park, or 1-2 minutes. Dealer responses vary. Some replace a battery that does not fix it, some replace the starter, and some advise disabling the feature every drive. A report involving 2 injuries describes shutdowns during adaptive cruise control. Other reports describe a loss of power while driving.
Transmission6No crashes
Shutdowns at stops after Auto Idle Stop also show up here. The van shifts itself into park and will not restart until the driver repeats the start sequence, sometimes many times. Other reports describe the van failing to accelerate from a stoplight with idle stop enabled. Dealers repeatedly suggest turning the feature off. Separate reports describe more serious transmission trouble: a transmission needing full replacement for faulty internal seals in a van less than one year old, and a transmission that dropped into park while the van was rolling, causing a whiplash-like jolt.
Automatic emergency braking41 crash
Automatic emergency braking slams on the brakes with nothing ahead, triggered by shadows, hills, or nothing visible. These events lead to near rear-end collisions, one crash, and neck and shoulder injuries. Dealers find the activation in stored data but no reason code. A second pattern shows up on hot days. After the van sits in the sun, the dash fills with beeping warnings such as an Adaptive Cruise Control System Problem, and driver aids shut off until the van cools after 15 to 20 minutes of driving.
Body and structure3No crashes
Moonroof glass shatters without warning while driving, including at highway speed on a hot day. A closed sliding cover keeps the glass out of the cabin. Other reports in this group describe idle stop shutdowns blamed on a failed starter, with the replacement part on backorder for over a month. Factory build flaws also appear. These include a lane departure system that jerks the wheel, an A/C system found overfilled with an electrical connection left unhooked, and wide body panel gaps near the sliding door.
Suspension2No crashes
Vibration and shaking show up early in the van's life. In one report the rear shakes only under braking at moderate to highway speeds. The dealer documents rear brake rotor thickness variation but makes no repair. Another report pairs a vibration diagnosed as worn shocks, with tire wear not covered, with an idle stop restart failure that the dealer blames on the battery. With only 2 complaints on file, the data shows no clear pattern.
Brakes2No crashes
The brake pedal stiffens sharply at low speed while the red brake warning lights up, and the van barely stops. Stability warnings and a Call your Dealer message come with it, and the repair is a replacement brake booster. In the other report, the emergency avoidance system brakes hard at about 40 mph on a clear road and the van is nearly rear-ended. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both involve a real loss of braking control.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Odyssey owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The auto on/off while idling will randomly fail. The car stalls, all emergency lights turn on and the car won’t start for a few minutes. This has occurred at stop lights and in traffic after coming to a complete stop and the car turns off when idling. The car is only 6 months old. The first occurrence happened at the 3 month mark and has become more persistent. I’ve had my battery checked and that was not an issue.

Vehicle stalled on a highway after an idle stop event at a stop light. Vehicle went to PARK. Required a full restart by operator to go when light changed and traffic was flowing in other lanes. Dealership examined next day and indicated battery was good. Voltage dropping to 8V to 10V when starting. Recommended to disable idle stop each time vehicle is started. A new starter was authorized and placed on order.

Auto start/stop functionality has resulted in vehicle stalling mid traffic as vehicle does not start and shutdowns. This has occurred in multiple occasions and most recently almost caused an accident with my family. We sent to dealer who checked battery and stated to issues. There were no warnings and dealer was unable to reproduce as they didn’t drive the vehicle. I have concerns with this new vehicle after finding other reports of this issue.

At a stop, the fuel save system shut the car off. When you take your foot off the brake the van fails to restart. If you try to restart using the push button the car will still not start because the transmission is still in drive. Then it takes awhile to get the transmission into park/neutral and then the van will start. The problem is intermittent 3 times in the last 2 months. No accidents just blocking traffic. My wife doesn't like that.

The CMBS braking system is completely faulty. It regularly brakes for shadows on the ground, going up hills, or for no reason at all. There have been SEVERAL near misses where cars behind me have almost rear ended me because of this cars erratic braking. I have a neck injury from this most recent episode of the car slamming the brakes for no reason.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
If the car is standing in sun on a very hot day, upon starting the engine it will start beeping with all these errors blinking and disabling these controls. Once the engine runs for 15,20 minutes and the car cools down, the warnings disappear too.
