Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical13No crashes

Engines fail to restart after Auto Idle Stop shuts them off at lights and stop signs. Sometimes the whole van, electronics included, goes dead, and drivers have to shift to Park and press the start button several times while traffic swerves around them. Reports point to hot weather and longer drives as triggers, and some mention a battery warning light. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem, and new batteries have not fixed it. Other reports describe frozen infotainment screens, unexpected shifts into Park, repeated jump starts, and brief power loss on the freeway.

  • Automatic emergency braking51 crash

Automatic emergency braking slams on the brakes with nothing ahead, including while merging onto highways. It has also failed to react to vehicles crossing from the side, and one of those reports involves a crash with 2 injuries. A "Radar Obstructed" warning can switch off emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and collision warning even when the sensor area is clean. One owner was quoted $800 for each recalibration. Camera and radar failures appear at low mileage. The speed-limit display sometimes reads highway route numbers as posted limits.

  • Engine5No crashes

Most of these reports describe the same Auto Idle Stop restart failure. The engine stays off when the light turns green, leaving families stuck in middle lanes of busy roads. Dealer resets have not fixed it, and some dealers could not reproduce it. A second pattern is a rough, hesitant idle at stops, which dealers have diagnosed as a misfire. Honda's response in these reports is that the misfire is a normal characteristic of the vehicle, so it goes unrepaired. No warning lights come on with either problem.

  • Brakes3No crashes

The van brakes hard on its own with no car or obstacle ahead. It has happened while accelerating and at 60 mph, nearly causing rear-end and multi-car collisions. One report includes an injury, a head strike from the sudden stop. No warning light comes on, and one van went through several dealers with no diagnosis or repair. The complaints tie this to the collision mitigation braking system, not to a failure of the brakes themselves. One case appeared at about 2,997 miles.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The transmission shifts hard in the lower gears, and the van jumps or jerks. Owners worry this could cause a loss of control on wet roads. Restart failures from Auto Idle Stop show up here too, mainly after drives of an hour or more, and switching the van fully off and on again gets it running. Related reports describe slow starts, a refusal to engage reverse, and radio faults that a dealer blamed on a battery that would not hold a full charge.

  • Steering2No crashes

Sudden jerks while driving make it feel as if the van is taking over the wheel. In that case the dealer pointed to the automatic gearbox. Another van showed several warnings at startup, covering ABS, electric steering, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise. The cause was a severed and cut wiring harness for the right rear ABS sensor, found at about 4,000 miles on a van with no prior damage. Losing that sensor hurt the van's handling and braking.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Odyssey owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
For a fourth time this year, the vehicle suddenly loses power while travelling on the freeway. It completely shuts off acceleration for 30-60 seconds and then picks back up by itself. The last two ocassions it happened was between 8:10 am and 8:12 am on August 18,2025. It happened on the freeway again on August 22 at about 8:13 am. I fear for my safety and life driving on the freeway

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Electrical
When the idle stop feature is engaged (it is by default), my van will die at stoplights, stop signs, or any extended stop. The van has been to the dealership multiple times, battery has been replaced. Service advisor informed me that this is a frequent and known issue with Odysseys. I’m just hoping for some help and/or guidance to remedy this potentially dangerous situation.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Automatic emergency braking
The camera on top of the windshield and the radar behind the grill failed and the van has less then 12,000 miles! This is a well known issue. There is no obstruction. The area is clean and clear. Totally unacceptable.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Automatic emergency brakingCrash reported
At speed less than 25 mph, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) did not work. At cross roads this CMBS will not work when a vehicle comes from the side. This will work only if it detects the vehicle's presence in front for more than 3-5 seconds. Will not activate during sudden presence of vehicle at any speed.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Engine
I was stopped at a red light for a long time. The idle on/off feature engaged, turning the engine off as expected. However, the engine would not turn back on; the vehicle completely stalled. It took several attempts to get the vehicle to turn back on. I was on a very busy 5-lane road with my child in the car. This was very dangerous as we were in a middle lane. We would not be able to safely exit the vehicle. I was extremely worried we would be rear-ended.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Engine
Vehicle will fail to restart after Auto Idle Stop engages at times. Dealership performed reset, but issue continued afterwards . Safety Issue due to delayed acceleration. Has been brought in twice for this issue with no resolution.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Brakes
I was driving my vehicle and accelerating. My vehicle suddenly braked with no warning while I was driving. I hit my left side of my head as I was not expecting this to happen. I was nearly rear-ended/nearly caused a multi car accident. It was incredibly scary to have the CMBS go off for absolutely no reason. There was no car ahead of me or other reason for it to happen.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Brakes
This car continues to slam on the automatic brakes when there is no obstruction. There is no car in front of me today. It almost caused a major accident.
