Which Corolla Cross is it?

  • The 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Taillights put out only a small dot of red light at each corner after dark, so the car is hard to see from behind. Complaints single out the SE, compare it poorly with the larger XSE lamps, and describe near rear-end collisions at night. A separate report describes a broken front left headlight mount. A dealer inspected it and declined to cover it under warranty, and the owner says similar complaints appear online.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

The pre-collision system sounds loud warnings and brakes hard when nothing is in the road. That raises the risk of a rear-end crash, especially at highway speed. A dealer suggested a loss of communication as the cause. Other reports describe cruise control speeding up well past its set speed until the driver braked. Lane keeping is also reported to misread center and shoulder lines and steer the wrong way, mostly on rural roads without markings. Drivers report near collisions and switching the feature off. These problems show up on new cars.

  • Electrical3No crashes

The infotainment screen goes black and the speedometer reads well above or below actual speed. Some cars also lurch forward in park when they switch from electric idle to engine idle. One car arrived new with a warped dashboard, speakers pulling loose and a puckering steering wheel cover. Dealers either did not attempt repairs or found no fault without doing a road or GPS test. An inaccurate speedometer can lead to accidental speeding.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Power cuts out while driving and then comes back, leaving the car briefly unable to keep up with traffic. Both reports involve cars only days old. One describes a transmission failure at about 25 miles that took a month to repair, and acceleration still felt weaker afterward. The other describes repeated power loss in the first week, which the dealer first put down to unfamiliar technology. Losing power in traffic creates a real risk of being hit by other vehicles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Corolla Cross owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
Front Left Side Headlight Mount is Broken on my Vehicle. On Internet also many consumers are complaining about the Left Headlight mount Broken but no support from Toyota. Feel Safe but not sure when this Headlight might come out of the vehicle. This issue is there and already inspected by the Dealer but they dont care to cover under warranty.

Exterior lights
The tail lights on the SE version are way too small. We have had numerous instances on near rear end collisions due to the size and placement of the SE model tail lights. They are tiny and they only offer much larger, safe taillights on the XSE model. Really do not even understand how the SE taillight configuration is legal.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Automatic emergency braking
Passive cruise control was set to 65 mph and the vehicle without being prompted by operator rapidly accelerated to 80 mph before operator hit brakes. Acceleration would have likely continued if operator had not hit brakes.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Transmission
On day 3 of having the car brand new straight from the dealer about 25 miles on it the transmission went out. Spent a month for them to fix it. Still does not drive the same and I can tell does not excellerate the same.
