Reported on other Niro years with the same design

These years share the 2025's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Have the 12-volt battery load-tested and ask the seller about any dead-battery or no-start events.
  • Check under the hood and around wiring for rodent nests, droppings, or chewed insulation.
  • Start the car several times and confirm the screen, climate controls, and cameras power up with no warning lights.

Which Niro is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Kia Niro. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

1.6L 4-cylHybridFWD53 mpg
1.6L 4-cylPlug-in hybridFWD510 mi range
  • The 2025 Kia Niro was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 253 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Kia Niro, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Automatic emergency braking21 crash

The driver-assist systems sometimes fail to react to vehicles ahead. One crash report says the front collision sensor gave no warning at night but seemed to work in daylight, and the air bags did not deploy. Another describes adaptive cruise control holding 45 mph while closing on slower traffic, with no braking and no alert. Both reports point to a real collision risk if the driver trusts the system and stops watching the road.

  • Suspension2No crashes

A loud, constant groaning noise was traced to shredded rack and pinion gears. The same filing also reports high RPM at low speeds, a random switch to manual mode, a transmission replaced twice, and over 4 months at the dealer. A second report describes tires wearing out oddly by the second oil change on a car driven mostly on the highway. New tires and an alignment were needed, and the dealer refused responsibility. Neither filing reports a crash.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Niro owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Suspension
I purchased this vehicle new from the dealer last year. The second time I went to them for an oil change the tires were worn out oddly and needed to be replaced. They said the car needed an alignment that I had to pay for. I purchased replacement tires from another shop and had the alignment paid for at another shop. The dealer refused any responsibility. This vehicle has not been in any accidents and miles driven are highway miles

Where the 2025 fits in the Niro's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2025 is the third model year of the Niro's second generation (2023 on).

Kia updated the Niro for 2026, so a 2025 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2026 (not on a 2025)

  • Discontinuation of plug-in hybrid and battery electric models

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V024000SeatsJan 2025

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles. The floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat may become damaged, which can prevent the front air bags and seat belts from deploying properly or cause an unintended side curtain air bag deployment.

Risk: Air bags and seat belts that deploy improperly or an air bag deploying unintentionally can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect, replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary, free of charge. In addition, dealers will install wiring covers. Owner notification letters were mailed February 27, 2025. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC332.
