Which Avalon is it?

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cylGasFWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD44 mpg
  • The 2022 Toyota Avalon was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Avalon that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Toyota Avalon, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

Sudden blowouts strike at highway speed. The outer sidewall comes apart and pressure drops straight to 0 PSI. The tire pressure warning gives no early alert because the air loss is instant rather than gradual. Both reports involve fairly new tires, including one on a car with less than 5,000 miles that was inflated to the specified 35 PSI. One blowout caused an injury. An independent inspection traced one failure to a manufacturing defect, not wear or road damage. A rear tire failing at freeway speed puts the car's stability at risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Avalon owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wheels and tires
Tire blew out, the outer sidewall completely came apart at the seams. There was no external pressure and there are less than 5,000 miles on the car. The PSI was at 35 as per the manufacturers spec.
