  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical31 crash

Remote start fails, the key fob will not unlock the doors, and the instrument panel freezes with the speed, RPM and fuel gauges pinned at maximum. That leaves the driver locked out without the physical key. Unplugging the charging cable before a charge finishes trips the household GFI outlet, and the fault repeats on a second Outlander. One crash report describes a high-speed front-end deer strike at 80 mph with heavy damage in which the airbags did not deploy. Problems are reported within days of purchase.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Sudden, unintended acceleration at low speed is the most serious report. It happens with cruise control off, braking does not stop the car, and the forward collision warning stays silent. That case ends in a multi-car crash and a total loss at about 850 miles. A separate pattern involves cruise control cutting out at highway speed with a "Radar Interrupted" message, repeating several times on one car near 19,000 miles. Both reports describe a loss of expected speed control at speed.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

Adaptive cruise shuts off at random on the highway, and the forward collision warning light comes on. Collision warning and automatic emergency braking stay off until the light clears, and the cycle repeats many times per trip. A dealer reportedly called it a known issue with no fix. Other complaints describe the car braking hard for stopped traffic at red lights or after a car leaves the lane, slow acceleration on resume, and missed vehicles during lane changes and turns. A dealer technician confirmed these faults on a test drive.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

Front seat belts retract too slowly on both the driver and passenger sides. A belt that does not pull back in time gets caught when the door closes. Jammed belts have damaged the front and rear passenger doors and made the door hard to open, which could delay getting out in an emergency. A slow driver-side belt also makes getting out of the car slower. Complaints have gone to the dealer service department, but the reports do not describe a repair.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Outlander owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Vehicle trips the GFI on disconnect from charging. If vehicle finishes charging, no issue. If you pull the cable before completing full charge, trips the GFI. Have a Prius Hybrid using same charger and no issue. Have checked this with another Outlander and same issue. Unplugging it during charge cycle trips the GFI.

Automatic emergency braking
David the Mitsubishi technician drove with me today and witnessed the issues with the adaptive cruise control system. 1. Slow to gain speed on resume in any situation. 2. Car slamming on brakes when sensing a car at a red light, when a car leaves the lane that I am in and there is a stopped car at a red light or not stopping at all. 3. When making a turn into a left or right lane, car will not sense the other car or it will slam the brakes unsafely

Seat belts
1. Driver side seat belt is not retracting as it should. 2. Causing a slower exit when getting out of the vehicle. 3. A compliant has been made to Glassman Southfield MI. Mitsubishi service department not only for the driver side seat belt but the passenger seat belt as well. 4. Just by Glassman Southfield MI. Mitsubishi service department. 5. No
