Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Excessive oil consumption
3,600–24,000 miles
Rusted rotors, early pad wear
15,000–16,000 miles
Rear differential failure
24,000–26,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Mazda 5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine72No crashes
Oil disappears between changes with no visible leak. The low oil light usually comes on 2,000 to 5,000 miles after a service, often on cars with under 20,000 miles, and some engines use up to a quart every 1,000 miles. Dealers typically confirm there is no leak, top off the oil, and offer no lasting fix. Several owners cite a service bulletin that blames faulty valve stem seals. Owners worry that the steady oil loss will lead to early engine damage.
Transmission19No crashes
Rear differential failure is the most serious pattern. Owners hear a new noise or a sudden loud bang. After that, the cracked housing locks the rear wheels whenever all-wheel drive engages, which creates a real loss-of-control risk. Failures are reported before 26,000 miles. Oil consumption also shows up here, with low oil warnings 3,000 to 4,500 miles after a change. Other reports cover leaking seals and timing cover gaskets, radiator leaks with coolant loss, overheating, jerky driving below 30 mph, and a burned-out clutch.
Electrical142 crashes
Sudden, unintended acceleration and fire are the gravest reports. One car sped up on its own and hit a tree, injuring the driver. Two cars caught fire: one while parked at about 1,500 miles and one on a tow truck. Blind spot monitoring misses some vehicles and has been tied to a crash. The infotainment screen often goes black and takes the backup camera with it, and the radio audio cuts out. Other reports describe the engine dying in traffic, a keyless ignition malfunction, a drained battery, and a driver window that drops instead of rising.
Brakes9No crashes
Front rotors rust and pads chip or wear out early, often around 15,000 miles. Owners feel vibration and shaking when braking. Dealers treat this as normal wear and charge for the repair. A second pattern involves automatic braking that slams on with nothing ahead. In one case, this caused a skid on a wet road. Owners also describe soft brakes after long drives in traffic, clicking pads, and antilock brake malfunction alerts on a brand-new car.
Airbags71 crash
An airbag malfunction warning flickers on and off during drives, sometimes on cars with under 500 miles. One dealer traced it to a short circuit in the driver's side airbags, which could keep them from deploying or make them deploy early. Both failure modes appear in reports. Airbags fail to deploy in a hard rear-end crash that caused an injury, and airbags fire at low speed after a light curb bump or with no impact at all.
Acceleration and cruise control54 crashes
The car surges forward while parking or stopping even though the driver is pressing the brake. This pattern accounts for 4 crashes and 4 injuries, including impacts with a wall and a garage door. Dealers usually find no fault codes. Owners also say adaptive cruise control sometimes accelerates toward slowing traffic instead of braking, leading to a rear-end collision. In snow, buildup on the front emblem blocks the cruise control radar and shuts the system off.
Automatic emergency braking5No crashes
Emergency braking activates when nothing is in the way. Owners report hard stops when pulling away from a green light, during lane changes, in turns when cars in the next lane are mistaken for obstacles, and on empty roads. These sudden stops nearly lead to rear-end collisions. The lane-keeping system also steers toward curves that do not exist, so some owners keep it switched off. One owner was told by the dealer that the braking feature cannot be disabled.
Lane keeping4No crashes
Problems with the forward sensing camera disable several safety systems at once, including emergency braking, traction control, and lane keeping and departure warnings. In one case, a fault code for a wrong mounting position turned up during windshield work, with no warning to the driver. Blind spot monitoring also misses some vehicles, especially on the freeway. Dealers report no codes and say they cannot repair it.

Low engine oil level light & status is coming on for our 2021 Mazda CX-5 turbo. It has 9115 miles and still 1300 miles away from needing oil change. I called our dealership today & was informed we were the 2nd to call today with message. They provided no further info. I have since found there are technical bulletins regarding this issue. Recalls need to be made & Mazda should be covering all repair costs for this.

Driving on a remote highway in northern WI and low oil light illuminated, 1000 miles before oil change was due with less than 10k miles on the vehicle. Made it to a gas station and oil was a quart low. Vehicle burns over a quart every oil change interval, since this has been occurring since day 1 it is likely going to cause premature engine failure which would be a safety issue.

Low oil level between oil change cycles with over 1,000 miles remaining before oil change is required. This has happened between both oil changes so far and I have to add oil myself to ensure oil level isn’t low. The oil consumption seems extremely high and is concerning that at only 12,000 miles I’ve had this problem happen twice.

It appears that my car has the check oil level light coming on at approximately 3000 to 4000 miles after an oil change. This seems like a safety issue to me because a brand new car should not be burning a quart of oil at this interval.

The driver window, upon attempted to be let up, will start to go up then go all the way down, ignoring the function to go up. This is a safety concern, as harsh temperatures and foreign objects are able to enter the vehicle cabin at any time, including driving. The problem has been reproduced by a dealer, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. There are no warning indicators for this issue beyond witness the failure occur in real time.

Infotainment system went dark and I cannot get it to come back on. I’ve read that this has been an ongoing issue and is covered in Mazda cx5 models up to 2020 thru a class action lawsuit, but my one is a 2021 (manufactured we’ll before 2021 though) with a virtually identical system.

Brakes are underpowered especially when hot. Drove 20-30 minutes in traffic and when decelerating from 60 mph highway in turn lane to turn into neighborhood the brakes felt very soft . Car only has 28k miles on it and pads have plenty of life left. Have seen similar complaints on online forums.

During a night drive, travelling approx. 40mph, car warning system audio blared a warning and suddenly braked causing car to skid (was raining) and causing driver to also jolt forward with momentum. There was very little time between beginning of audio warning and car slamming on brakes.
