These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Wagoneer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
5.7L 8-cylAWD, RWD17–18 mpg
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Wagoneer that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical742 crashes

Sudden shutdowns while driving dominate, most often when slowing for a light or pulling away from a stop, and sometimes at highway speed. Battery and check engine lights come on, screens go dark, and steering and brakes can drop out. Some drivers say the parking brake clamps on after a restart, and two crashes are tied to these events. Dead 12-volt and auxiliary batteries keep coming back, often after several dealer visits. Many failures appear after 25,000 miles, though some new vehicles fail within weeks. A separate report describes false emergency braking on adaptive cruise.

  • Steering30No crashes

Power steering cuts out, usually as part of a full electrical shutdown while driving. In one case the dealer traced it to a failed 48-volt eTorque battery pack. The other main pattern is front-end alignment that won't stay set. The outer edges of the front tires wear down to the steel belts, sometimes within 2,000 miles of new tires. Owners also report a wobble above 65 mph and a hard pull to the right. Dealers often blame the tires and find no fix. One report describes a heated steering wheel that shorted out with a burning smell.

  • Transmission211 crash

The vehicle shuts off while moving, shifts itself into park, and loses steering and braking assist, often right after a low-battery warning. Dealer diagnoses include failed 48-volt batteries, alternators, and the eTorque motor generator unit, with one part on back order for more than 45 days. On some brand-new vehicles, the 4WD system locks in 4LO at 700 to 800 miles because of a control module that had no software fix yet. Other reports include a transmission replacement around 31,000 miles, one fire-related engine failure, and one crash where the vehicle moved with nobody at the wheel.

  • Engine10No crashes

Stalling at low speed or at a stop is the core complaint. A shift-to-park message appears, and the vehicle puts itself in park. Drivers have to shut it off and restart it to keep going. The automatic parking brake can apply during these stalls, and one report describes a shutdown at 70 mph. Some failures are blamed on the eTorque system. In one case the replacement part was on back order and the wait was quoted at up to 7 months. Dealers often can't find a cause, and some owners lose hazard lights when the vehicle goes dead.

Stalls with loss of power steering and brakes appear here, and one stall at about 33,000 miles left the vehicle unable to restart. In one fire-related report, smoke from the engine bay entered the cabin at low speed, and the generator and start/stop battery were found to have caught fire. A separate complaint describes a constant odor and discolored, rust-colored coolant. Dealers could not reproduce that problem or find a leak.

  • Suspension9No crashes

Front tires wear unevenly, usually bald on the outer edge of the front right tire, even after repeated alignments. Some owners are on their third set of tires. Shaking or vibration starts around 70 to 75 mph and continues after new tires. Several dealers have failed to find the cause. Other reports include a torn rear axle boot with lasting vibration, the air suspension shutting off, and side curtain airbags deploying during a swerve without a crash. One owner found a rear suspension arm missing its bolt after a wheel failure at 9,000 miles.

  • Brakes84 crashes

The brake pedal sinks or stops working without warning, and the vehicle keeps rolling at low speed in driveways, school drop-off lines, and parking lots. Four of these reports involve crashes, and one involves an injury, including a parking-lot collision where forward collision warning gave no alert. Other drivers report ABS and traction warnings before the brakes fail on the highway. The electronic parking brake can also engage while the vehicle is moving, or the vehicle can throw itself into park at a light. One case was escalated to the manufacturer for engineering review.

  • Seats5No crashes

Second-row seats fold forward hard when the button on top of the seatback is pressed, and children in car seats can reach it easily. One injury is reported. The driver's power seat loses its memory settings and moves on its own while driving, sometimes pushing the driver toward the steering wheel. Dealer software updates have not stopped it, and one case appeared around 5,000 miles. A second-row middle seat stuck upright is also reported.

  • Body and structure31 crash

Frame rail extension welds broke while the vehicle was being flat-towed behind an RV. The vehicle came loose and hit a utility pole. Other reports describe exterior quarter window trim coming loose, a visor dropping on its wires, and a rattle from a gap between the third-row window and side panel. One owner also reports clunking and vibration from the front wheels during sharp turns, with front camera warnings turning off driver assist.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Wagoneer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While cruising on the freeway at approximately 70 miles per hour with no vehicles or objects ahead. The vehicle suddenly made a loud warning sound and flashed a message on the dash. The emergency brakes were automatically applied and nearly stopped in the middle of the freeway. The car behind had to swerve to avoid a collision. The vehicle then resumed driving forward. I was using the adaptive cruise control.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2026

ElectricalCrash reported
I was stopped at a red light, stacked about 10 cars deep. Once the light turned green, I pressed the gas pedal, but the auto start-stop feature malfunctioned and turned the car completely off. I then pressed the button to reactivate the ignition, and pressed the gas pedal again. After moving forward a few car lengths (or more), the computer engaged the emergency brake and clamped down on the wheels. I was then rear-ended at about 15-20mph.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Steering
While approaching a stop sign at a speed of less than 10mph with my wife and three small children in the car, the engine shut off and the steering/braking became degraded. I was able to restart the car after stopping, but the auto start / etorque does not appear to be working any more. I will be dropping the car off for diagnostics, but after some research this appears to be a common issue which is already under investigation.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Steering
Vehicle lost brakes for the second time while driving and also lost power steering. Vehicle was serviced at dealership after first incident and was supposedly fixed by replacing the battery. It was obviously not fixed since it happened again 12 days later. Both times the vehicle randomly, and with no warning, lost braking ability and power steering.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Transmission
At around 800 miles several warning lights turn on regarding servicing 4WD system and the vehicle became stuck in 4LO. The rear differential and transfer case were shot already and was told from dealer the cause was a control module but they had no update or fix for the module yet. Vehicle was not able to be driven without further damage until repaired. Going on 3 weeks without brand new vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Transmission
While driving, 4WD low engaged. Would not disengage. Had to take it to the dealer with 700 miles on it. They reset the Drive Train Control Module. Jeep claims it needs a software update but it's not out yet. These vehicles are dangerous to drive in this condition.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Engine
The E torque system needs replaced and the part has been on backorder for months. The dealer has no idea when the new part will be available and may be up to 7 months. The vehicle is loud which is what prompted us to take it in for evaluation. We had an incident where the vehicle while in reverse and it abruptly stopped and the emergency brake was on. It would not let me move my vehicle without turning it off and back on to allow me to continue reversing.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Engine
While driving in my neighborhood, the car randomly shut itself off. The car was beeping and a message on the screen said “shift into park.” Once I came to a full stop, the car put itself into park and shut off completely.

Where the 2022 fits in the Wagoneer's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the first model year of the Wagoneer's fourth generation (2022–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Jeep fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Jeep updated the Wagoneer for 2024, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2022)
