Which Odyssey is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Honda Odyssey. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5L 6-cyl | FWD | 22 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Odyssey that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical28No crashes
The engine shuts off at stops, often tied to the auto idle stop system, and sometimes won't restart without a jump. Some vans lose all electrical power at a light. Dealers often replace the battery, but the stalling returns. Other reports describe false automatic braking, sliding doors closing on children without reversing, a power tailgate shorted by a water leak, and rear cameras and warnings that fail again after a recall repair. One third-row power outlet caught fire. Of 28 complaints, 2 involve injuries.
Transmission14No crashes
The 10-speed automatic transmission suddenly stops delivering power, usually at highway speed. The engine revs as if in neutral, the van slows, and drivers coast to the shoulder in traffic. Warning lights often appear only after the failure, or not at all. Many cases involve nearly new vans between 130 and 2,000 miles, and dealers commonly replace the whole transmission. Other reports describe refusal to shift, a flashing gear indicator, and a failed transmission at 120,000 miles with a quoted $4,000 replacement.
Automatic emergency braking131 crash
The automatic emergency braking system slams on the brakes with nothing ahead, on city streets and highways alike. A BRAKE alert may flash as it happens, but often there is no warning. One false stop led to a rear-end crash, and another hard stop at 55 mph injured 4 occupants. Cars parked in adjacent lanes may set it off. Dealers frequently find nothing wrong. A few reports describe a radar obstruction warning after a car wash, followed by brake and cruise control warnings.
Airbags71 crash
Side curtain airbags deploy after a pothole or a blown tire with no collision. Other reports describe airbags that don't work when needed. In one, the bags did not deploy in a severe rear-end crash. In another, a bag fizzled out after a low-speed curb strike. SRS warning lights also come on, including on a van not covered by a related recall. Two reports involve BraunAbility wheelchair conversions: one airbag warning light after the modification, and one deployment after brushing a curb.
Brakes71 crash
Most reports describe the collision mitigation braking system activating with no hazard present, sometimes while accelerating, with no warning beforehand. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and some owners now switch the feature off. Two reports are more serious. In one, the brake pedal sank to the floor at about 15,000 miles. In the other, a van lurched forward from a full stop into the car ahead at 30,000 miles as a brake warning light came on. Warped rotors that shake the steering wheel come back soon after resurfacing.
Engine4No crashes
Stalls and sudden power loss happen without warning. One van died at a stop sign twice between 44,000 and 46,000 miles and was slow to restart. Another went into limp mode at 2,000 miles, and the dealer replaced the accelerator pedal. A repair shop reports high-pressure fuel pump failures on 2022 and 2023 vans past 80,000 miles, starting with hard starting, and ties them to a recall it says raises crash and fire risk. One owner describes sudden slowdowns from 60 to 35 mph and suspects false collision-system activations.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
The driver's side mirror vibrates, loses its angle, or shows a distorted image. The mirror is covered by a recall, but some owners wait for parts that are not available. One recall-replaced mirror failed again at about 20,000 miles. A dealer reportedly calls the vibration a known problem and says replacement mirrors have the same flaw. A separate report describes the sunroof exploding at 70 mph at 26,000 miles, with pieces coming off the van.
Body and structure2No crashes
The power tailgate sags or closes on its own after opening and hits people loading the cargo area. Both reports describe repeated hits to the head, and 2 injuries are recorded. One dealer blamed a failed support strut. Owners also cite a Honda service bulletin that describes the tailgate sagging, or sounding a warning tone before powering closed. The closing force is hard to stop. Because the problem is not under recall, owners report paying for the fix themselves.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Odyssey owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
It was the same thing as my last three reports. The vehicle stalls in a way that freezes the vehicle where I cannot turn it off or on or engage or remove the parking brake. I cannot put it in gear or in neutral. Last time it stalled me in the middle of a seven lane highway. This time it was in the middle of a hospital entrance. I feel like I am gambling with my life and the dealership won’t listen to me! How many times does this have to happen??

When I was driving my car and stopped at red light my car loss all electrical power and engine died. Would not restart had to have the car jumped off. This has happen several times and I just had it in a Honda dealership this morning and about 3 hours later my car loss all electrical power and died and would not restart. Honda dealership did not know what is causing this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
The car was purchased new, and wasn’t even a year old. We were driving on the highway and all the sudden the engine revved. The car would no longer accelerate. We were able to pull off the highway safely but the car would not accelerate more than a few miles per hour. There were no warning lights or indications of an issue with the car. The car was towed to Honda and a new transmission was installed.

I was driving on the highway with no cars or obstacles in front of me. The car auto brakes for me. If not because there were no car behind me, I would have been smashed by the car in the back. This have happen twice now!
Filed with NHTSA, October 2022
After I took my car through a car wash I got the folllowing alert, "Radar obstructed warning." After this warning I then got the warnings for brake system, cruise control all not working
Filed with NHTSA, October 2024
While waiting at a traffic light, I began moving as soon as the light turned green. However, I was momentarily blinded by the sun and accidentally hit the curb. The airbag deployed but failed to inflate properly; it just fizzled out and hung limp, like a deflated balloon. Fortunately, I was traveling at less than 5 mph, and no one was injured. However, the situation could have been much worse if the vehicle had been moving at a higher speed.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2024
Tired popped and all side airbags deployed - no collision or accident. No damage to the car except the wheel. Children were in the car and could have been seriously injured from airbags that deployed when there was not a serious reason for them to deploy.
