Which Canyon is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 GMC Canyon. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 4-cyl | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Canyon that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 GMC Canyon, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Exterior lights140No crashes
Headlights flicker off and on by themselves, often every minute or two, and some reports include the daytime running lights. No warning light comes on. Most cases start almost at delivery, between 20 and 600 miles. Other drivers read the flicker as being flashed, and reports describe brake checks, cars pulling out in front, and fear of road rage. Dealers confirm the problem, but many reports say no fix exists and parts are delayed. A smaller pattern: after a right turn, the left signal blinks for a few seconds.
Electrical23No crashes
Headlight flicker makes up most of these reports, with dealers able to reproduce it but unable to repair it. A second pattern is a battery that dies, sometimes during a software update. After a jump start, the brakes may not work normally and the dash limits speed for a while. Other reports describe infotainment audio cutting out, trailer brake and stability control shutting off while towing, and wiring faults that set warning lights. One describes a back-ordered anti-lock brake module that kept the truck off the road.
Engine9No crashes
Coolant leaks where the upper radiator hose connects to the radiator, and reports blame a failed O-ring or gasket. Leaks start as early as about 10,000 miles, and several reports come from trucks past 31,000 miles. The low coolant warning often comes late, after the reservoir is nearly or fully empty, so the engine risks overheating without notice. Replacement parts are often back-ordered, and some owners report warranty coverage disputes at higher mileage. Separate reports describe sudden loss of power with a reduced-power message while pulling into traffic.
Brakes8No crashes
Two problems stand out. Brake system faults trigger brake failure or ABS warnings, a stiff pedal, and a truck that will not slow properly, sometimes with a speed limit warning on the dash. Repairs include a replaced brake module, and one case at 250 miles involved the master cylinder and ABS module. Wear complaints describe warped rotors, pulsing stops, and uneven pad wear between 15,000 and 21,000 miles, with coverage denied as normal wear. Adaptive cruise also brakes hard with nothing ahead.
Steering5No crashes
Sticky or erratic steering is the main concern. One rack and pinion failed at 2,200 miles, forcing the driver to pull on the wheel to finish turns on the highway. Others report a service power steering message along with reduced power and a check engine light at highway speed, and the truck jerked hard enough to nearly lose control. Dealers could not trace a steering wheel noise in turns. Several reports filed here actually describe headlight flicker, the right-turn signal glitch, or a loose heat shield.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
Automatic braking engages with no real threat ahead. Cars in the next lane or oncoming traffic on two-lane roads set it off, and the truck brakes hard enough to throw the driver forward. One highway event dropped speed by about half and nearly caused a pileup behind the truck. Dealers can reproduce it, but camera replacements have not cured it. In another case the system did not work at all, and the dealer said repair must wait for a software update with no date.
Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes
Adaptive cruise brakes hard with no traffic ahead, cutting speed by 10 to 20 mph at highway speeds before speeding back up. That creates a rear-end risk from traffic behind. A separate report describes idle staying near 1,000 rpm after a service visit, so the truck keeps creeping forward and needs heavy brake pressure to stop. A software update meant to address it would not install. With only two reports here, the false braking matches the larger pattern under forward collision avoidance.
Body and structure2No crashes
The roof panel dents or caves inward with little force. In one case the dealer found the truck was built without roof braces, discovered at 4,000 miles, and braces were ordered. In another, a car wash air dryer made the roof pop in and out until the sheet metal dented, and the roof can be pushed in by hand. Owners worry about protection in a rollover. Only two reports exist, but both describe the same weak roof.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Canyon owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Headlights periodically turn off and on while driving automatically, randomly, and without warning. Causes other drivers to become confused, disoriented, or enraged. Drivers think they are being intentionally flashed or harassed and respond with brake check or moving to another lane and becoming visibly distressed. This is a new truck, with less than 500 miles, and no warning lights are issued.

Headlights flicker once every couple of minutes or so. This could very well indicate me flashing someone to turn or go in front of me. I have seen multiple internet threads of this same issue happening to 2024 GMC Canyon owners. The car has 500 miles on it and I've noticed it since I've had the vehicle. No warning signs or anything. Seems like it is computer related.

Infotainment system audio not working. Have performed hard reset, dealer reset, dealer service, and still audio is intermintant at best. more than 75% of the time I have no audio or sound at all. No raidio, no sxm, no bluetooth, no onstar. This is a safety issue and there does not appear to be a repair bulletin, and dealships dont know what to do.

Headlight flicker, affects day time running light, low beam, high beam and possibly taillights. Lighter flicker off and on periodically about every 1-2 minutes consistently regardless of driving or parked, and regardless if the lights are switched on automatically or manually. Problem has been continuous since purchase of vehicle 1 month ago.

Upper radiator hose attachment is leaking due to faulty rubber gasket. This comes up across GMC Canyon groups on Facebook 10 times a day. It is happening to ALL of them mainly pre 2025 on 3rd gens. Part is on back order at all GMC dealers due to so much volume of issue. Happening as early as 10k-20k miles on brand new trucks causing over heating issues due to coolant leaking out. Hopefully a recall for the part is done before engines start blowing.

Coolant Leaking at 22K miles, smell of coolant, check engine light on and off 2X's. Coolant evidence on driveway and in engine cabin. Known condition for GM Model. No parts available for replacement. No recall for issue.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2026
I first noticed the brakes squealing in August 2025 at 15,000 miles. The dealership said I needed to resurface the front rotors. I mistook this a coating and brake debris, but it was actually the rotors warping. By 21,000 the vehicle is pulsing heavily when stopping. I went back to the dealer and this time they told me all 4 rotors are warped. GM denied coverage of the pads and rotors. Normal driving, no collisions or towing.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2026
Upon starting the vehicle, I got multiple warning lights. The most important was brake failure. I had no brake function. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the brake module after 3 days.
