Which Trax is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Trax. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical41No crashes

The instrument cluster goes black while driving, often for a few seconds, leaving no speedometer, warning lights, or turn signals. Many reports tie this to recall 23V744000, but some cars were not covered and others still fail after the recall repair. Some cars shut down completely on the highway, and drivers report the brakes locking up after the power loss. Other complaints describe touchscreens that black out, Bluetooth and CarPlay drops, and flickering headlights. One report describes a loud pop, smoke under the hood, and a fire while driving. Cluster blackouts appear around 41,000 to 58,000 miles.

  • Engine21No crashes

Sudden engine failure at highway speed is the dominant complaint. Drivers describe a loud bang or pop, smoke, oil pouring onto the road, and total loss of power, often with little or no warning. Dealers report blown rods and seized engines, some under 14,000 miles. A few owners found the oil low between changes. Others report a check engine light and reduced power near 28,000 miles. Two complaints describe the engine compartment catching fire, one at 6,455 miles. Replacement engines can be backordered, and one replacement failed soon after installation.

  • Wipers and visibility7No crashes

Factory wiper blades smear and streak early, with one report at 7,000 miles and another of rubber detaching at 41,000. The wiper arm uses a proprietary attachment, so no aftermarket blades fit, and dealer replacements are often on back order. Owners describe poor visibility in rain and snow while waiting for parts. Another report has the wipers quitting entirely during snowstorms. Chrome interior trim also reflects sunlight into the driver's eyes, and owners say the sun visors do not block it.

  • Exterior lights7No crashes

Automatic headlights flash on and off in daylight, triggered by tree shade, underpasses, clouds, or reflections from the car ahead. Other drivers can read it as intentional flashing, and one owner was pulled over by police. Lights work normally at night. Dealers have replaced a sensor without fixing it, and some report GM calling the behavior normal. The only workaround is switching auto headlights off, which also turns off the daytime running lights.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Pulsation, slipping, and jerking show up at 60 to 72 mph, along with hard shifts at lower speeds. Some reports cannot tell whether the transmission or the brakes are at fault. One car was diagnosed with a defective valve body and torque converter, and the problem returned right after repair. Adaptive cruise control is linked to gear backlash noise and to sudden braking with a clear road ahead. Several reports end in engine failure with oil spilling out, followed by engine backorders and long rental periods.

  • Airbags44 crashes

Nondeployment in serious crashes makes up most reports, including a deer strike at 65 mph and two T-bone impacts. Those cars were described as likely or confirmed total losses, and occupants reported back, neck, and head injuries. In a separate crash where the bags did deploy, a seat air bag's vents faced the driver and burned skin across the ribs. Across 4 crash reports, 8 injuries are listed.

  • Brakes4No crashes

Brake power assist drops out while driving, with warnings for brake system failure, a 43 mph top speed, StabiliTrak, and reduced steering assist. Owners online point to a faulty brake fluid level sensor. Other reports describe rear brakes locking up at a light touch and automatic emergency braking stopping the car violently. In one case an air duct came loose from the heater and fell over the pedals, blocking both brake and accelerator.

  • Seat belts21 crash

In one high-speed crash, the seat belt extended fully, unlatched, and would not retract. The driver suffered abdominal injuries that required trauma surgery, and the insurance adjuster believed the belt failed. A separate complaint says the buckle sits too low between the seat and center console. That makes it hard to release quickly and could slow an emergency exit.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Trax owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My touch screen and odometer. They periodically go black while driving . This is a safety hazard to me and my family . Yes this affects the safety of my family due to the screens over heating and going black where I can’t see speed or anything . Yes the car has been taken to dealer ship for many issues I have had .no it has not only the dealership .no signals at all

Electrical
Ambient light sensor malfunctioned on my 2024 Trax. It would flicker on and off in daylight when in the auto lighting headlight mode. After checking Reddit, many other owners are having the same issue. Chevrolet bulletin 24-an-001 has a direct fix. Avoiding flashing other drivers is important, as this indicates imminent danger is near.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Engine
The engine failed at approximately 44,000 miles. The vehicle uses a wet timing belt engine design, where the timing belt runs inside the engine oil. The engine suddenly stopped working and now requires a full engine replacement. This failure happened much earlier than expected for a modern vehicle and could be a safety risk if the engine fails while driving.

Engine
I was driving on the highway at 60 miles per hourn, my car started shaking, my oil and engine light came on, if felt like little rock were hitting under my car and my car went out. I feared for my life. I was able to pull over on the median. When the tow truck came, the tow guy said my engine blew. I just had my oil changed by the dealer 12/26/2025.

Wipers and visibility
Wipers from the dealer are on back order in some cases and in the cases that they do have they they are trash wipers streaks and smears that just block visibility in snow and heavy rain additionally the arm attachment is completely different than any wiper attachment so you cannot get wipers from any auto part stores

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Wipers and visibility
Since purchasing the car brand new, the wipers have stopped working mid snowstorm, one time in March and another in April here in Colorado. I have had to take the vehicle in 2x to the dealership and waste hours of my time.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Exterior lights
When set to auto headlamps function, headlamp lights begin to flicker/flash on and off randomly while driving in sunny daylight conditions. This could be a distraction for drivers in front of vehicle. Dealership cannot repair problem as they claim not to have a Service Bulletin number from GM.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Exterior lights
When the auto headlight feature is on, the headlights keep flashing even when it is sunny outside. The intellibeam sensor seems to be too sensitive to any deviations in lighting. This could cause issues while driving if people think you are intentionally flashing your lights at them.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V744000ElectricalNov 2023

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Buick Encore GX, Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module (VCU) may cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go blank at vehicle startup or while driving.

Risk: A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: The VCU software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A232424320.
