Reported on other Camaro years with the same design

These years share the 2019's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2019 checks

  • Accelerate steadily to highway speed and feel for shudder, shaking, or jerking from the transmission.

2022 Camaro

10 owner complaints
  • Engine 3
  • Airbags 2
  • Transmission 2

Worth adding to your 2019 checks

  • Turn the key and confirm the air bag warning light clears, ideally after the car has sat for a couple of days.
  • Ask for written proof of dealer service on any engine or intake calibration, since non-dealer work led to a denied warranty claim.
  • Listen at idle and under load for knocking from the 6.2 engine, and ask for oil change records.

Which Camaro is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylRWD25 mpg
3.6L 6-cylRWD22 mpg
6.2L 8-cylRWD20 mpg
  • The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Camaro that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission15No crashes

The 8-speed automatic shudders and vibrates under light throttle and while cruising, usually between 25 and 80 mph. Owners compare it to rolling over strips in the road. Other reports describe hard first-to-second shifts, slipping, erratic shifting, and getting stuck in one gear with check-engine codes. Shops often blame the torque converter, and a GM service bulletin covers the shudder. Symptoms often begin around 30,000 miles and get worse over time. Dealers often call early symptoms normal. Stalling and occasional no-start conditions also appear.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The main problem is sudden loss of the instrument cluster and lighting. Gauges go blank at highway speed. In one case every interior and exterior light failed while driving in the dark, traced to a corroded rear bumper wiring harness. One cluster could not be replaced because the part was discontinued. Other reports describe flickering ABS and ESC lights, a false hood-open message that sets off the alarm, moisture in a headlight, a dead backup camera, and a stall from failed lifters. One complaint is about odometer fraud, not a defect.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out while the car is moving, leaving the wheel very heavy or briefly locked. Reports describe a Service Power Steering warning during track driving. On long highway drives, the steering stiffens and then jolts suddenly, forcing hard corrections to stay in the lane. Turning the car off and back on sometimes brings the assist back. Dealers often find no codes and make no repair. A brand-new car also shut down and restarted several times while moving and lost steering while parking. Every case carries a clear loss-of-control risk.

  • Engine3No crashes

Cooling system parts fail early. Reports describe a temperature gauge stuck on cold with the fan running all the time, blamed on the coolant temperature sensor and repeating on the same car. Another thermostat failed under 30,000 miles, well short of its expected life. In a separate case, a loud knock and a check-engine light at about 23,000 miles turned out to be a failed exhaust system, and the car was left unrepaired.

  • Brakes21 crash

Both the main brakes and the electric parking brake are involved. One crash report describes the brakes and steering not responding in a turn on a racetrack at about 50 mph. The car hit the wall at roughly 7,000 miles. Another report describes the parking brake engaging on its own at freeway speed, refusing to release, and reapplying after restarts, with error code C0293 stored. Both carry a serious loss-of-control risk.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The convertible's rear glass delaminates and pulls away from the top, starting at the corners. With the windows down the glass rattles, and owners worry it could blow off at speed and endanger other drivers. Replacement tops reportedly fail again after about 1 1/2 to 2 years. Dealers decline warranty coverage past 36,000 miles, and one car is on its third top.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Engine and fuel delivery failures cause sudden loss of power. In one report, the engine locked up in moderate traffic at highway speed. It happened just as cylinder deactivation switched from four cylinders back to eight on an uphill grade, and the owner had documented maintenance. Another report describes a cracked, leaking high-pressure fuel pump after 37k miles. A sudden engine lockup at speed carries a high crash risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Camaro owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
from the start of buying the car the transmission has shifted funny. The dealership was advised of this several times and always said nothing was wrong with it.Now the transmission is shuttering when going into higher gears.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Transmission
While cruising (not accelerating) or accelerating very slowly, the transmission goes into a shutter. I do believe this would be caused by the torque converter. Could be faulty. Seems to be a very common trend.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Electrical
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of the purchase, the mileage was 70,962. At the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 134,606.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Steering
Power steering on vehicle failed causing the steering to lock up while driving with almost no ability to stear the car. This problem was found and issued a recall on earlier years but not mine although the car was built the same time as those earlier years.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Engine
Thermostat is failing under part recommend mileage. GM is not taking this under consideration. States part last up to 100,000 miles. It’s failing under 30,000 miles.

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Chevrolet Camaro vehicles. The plastic "Camaro" emblem, located on the steering wheel air bag cover, may separate during deployment of the frontal driver air bag.

Risk: In the event of a crash, plastic pieces of emblem may act as projectiles from deployment of the driver air bag can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the frontal driver side air bag module, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N212327220.
