Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Camaro is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylRWD25 mpg
3.6L 6-cylRWD23 mpg
6.2L 8-cylRWD20 mpg
  • The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Camaro that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Early oil pump failure

    11,000–14,000 miles

  • Convertible rear glass separating

    32,000–40,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering15No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning, often mid-turn, at low speed, or at highway speeds near 75 mph, and the wheel turns very stiff. A "Service Power Steering" message sometimes appears, and some cars log a stuck steering gear code. A few reports pair the loss with a service rear axle message, gauges dropping to zero, or violent wheel shaking. Shops diagnose steering gear or assist motor failure. One car's steering seized at 92,276 miles. Several near-crashes and one collision with a divider are reported. A smaller group describes the car drifting, which was called tramlining.

  • Electrical14No crashes

Water collects in the trunk, where the rear fuse box, battery, and amplifier sit, and it corrodes or shorts them. Reports describe smoke from the trunk, melted relays and wiring, and cars that shut off while driving or will not restart. Two complaints involve fire. Owners blame poor drainage or leaking seals. A second pattern is a false "Shift to Park" message that keeps the car from shutting off fully and drains the battery. Other reports cover battery drain while parked, doors locking and unlocking on their own, and dead USB ports.

  • Transmission141 crash

Automatic cars shudder as if driving over rumble strips, with lag and loss of power. Owners tie the problem to the transmission fluid and report a flush under service bulletin 18-NA-355 as the fix, paid by owners once out of warranty. The 2.0-liter turbo draws complaints of violent shifts, especially into first at a stop. Manual cars stall or cut out pulling away from a stop, and one stall ended in a rear-end crash with an injury. Six-speed manuals grind or pop into neutral on downshifts to second.

  • Engine6No crashes

Oil pumps fail early on some cars. Oil pressure drops and then falls to zero while driving. Metal debris has destroyed engines and forced long-block replacements. Owners report pump trouble at 11,000 and 14k miles, and one engine was ruined at 18.6k miles after a dealer turned away the early warning signs. Other reports cover a collapsed lifter, an exhaust leak under the center console that lets fumes into the cabin while the repair waits on parts, and ZL1 manual cars whose torque management cuts power on takeoff and can stall.

  • Airbags42 crashes

No single repeated defect shows up here. In one crash, the driver airbag did not deploy after a dealer said an airbag warning had been fixed. One used car was sold without working airbags. In another case, the car sat for months because replacement curtain airbags were unavailable, a parts shortage rather than a failure. A fire complaint involves a phone charger that caught fire, ignited the passenger seat, and burned the whole car.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

The defroster fogs the inside of the windshield instead of clearing it, especially with the A/C running, so drivers wipe the glass by hand while driving. Owners say dealer fixes did not help, and GM told one owner the car works as designed. The other reports cover the convertible's rear glass separating from the top. One car showed it at 32k miles, and owners were told the repair is not covered.

  • Fuel system4No crashes

Fuel pumps fail and leave the car unable to start. Before that, owners notice whining from the tank, hesitation, stalling, and a fuel smell at startup. One car was first misdiagnosed with a bad battery. A broken weld on a fuel line bracket at the cylinder head caused a leak that sprayed fuel toward the exhaust, a fire risk. Poorly welded exhaust pieces come loose repeatedly and let fumes escape.

  • Stability control22 crashes

Both reports describe a sudden loss of control at freeway speed that ended in a crash. In one, the car kicked sideways during a lane change, left the highway, and flipped. In the other, a rear wheel locked, the brake pedal went hard, and the car spun out. Both drivers felt the car speed up instead of slowing down. The two crashes injured 3 people, and one car later showed antilock brake and stability system faults.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Camaro owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
The vehicle has been taken to the shop 3 times, for service rear axle issue. now has a power steering fault code which when it came on made the car hard to control luckily i was only going 20 mph. the car looses power as well

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Electrical
Manufacturer default in the trunk. Water is getting into the trunk causing water to fill up in the battery compartment. Thus, shutting the vehicle electrical system down completely. After researching, I contacted GM who stated that they are unaware of this issue, although many people who own this type of vehicle have had this issue occur.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Electrical
-Convertible back window popped out on right (passenger side), seal failed. A Chevy repair shop acknowledged the recall but said they did not have technicians trained & were limiting repairs due to COVID-19. -Engine shudders, loss of power -Electrical failure of USB connections in middle console

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
Engine began to shudder as if the engine wants to turn off. It can also feel as if there is some issues with the drive axles. It leads to loss of power of the engine. The loss of power goes away upon shutting the engine off and turning it back on however the check engine light remains on and the error code p0420 displays on the reader.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2022

Transmission
The transmission shudder from bad transmission fluid results in major loss of power and makes it unsafe to turn left on green on green ..makes me afraid to pull out knowing it might shudder and not get out of the way in time for city traffic...

Filed with NHTSA, August 2022

Engine
Lifter collapsed. Car had new gm lifters put in with a new camshaft in august of 2025 they have about 5k miles on them and failed they are the gm high performance lifters

Where the 2018 fits in the Camaro's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2018 is the third model year of the Camaro's sixth generation (2016–2024).

Chevrolet updated the Camaro for 2019, so a 2018 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2019 (not on a 2018)

  • New set of LED headlights
  • Revised fascia designs
