Which X7 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 BMW X7. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.0L 6-cyl | AWD | 22 mpg |
| 4.4L 8-cyl | AWD | 18 mpg |
- The 2024 BMW X7 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X7 that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 BMW X7, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Brakes281 crash
Long waits for a brake repair part make up most of these reports. Owners say they were notified of a brake-system recall, but dealers have no part to do the work and give no date. A smaller group describes real braking trouble: sliding through intersections, needing to press the pedal hard to stop from 65 mph, noisy brakes, and the car creeping forward at stops. In one crash, collision warning and automatic emergency braking did not activate, and the car rear-ended another vehicle.
Stability control8No crashes
Most of these filings come from owners who say a brake and stability control recall repair is stuck because parts are unavailable. Most of them have had no failure. A few describe serious failures at highway speed. In one, the pedal goes to the floor at 60 mph and the car does not slow. In another, the engine stalls at 70 mph. Owners also report brakes locking up and warnings about the brakes, stability control, and steering. Repeat dealer visits often fail to fix the problem, and one car needs a new stability control unit.
Electrical6No crashes
Repeated loss of braking power is the most serious pattern. It comes with a cluster of warnings for the brake system, parking brake, and reduced driver assistance. The trouble continues even after dealers replace major brake components. Other reports describe the car switching itself on and off, a power failure mode that warns the driver to stop and then shifts into park, and a blank center screen. Some owners say the air conditioning cannot cool a full cabin above 80°, and dealers report it working within spec.
Transmission2No crashes
A "drivetrain malfunction" message appears, and the engine shuts off while driving or will not start. Speed drops suddenly in traffic with no warning or time to pull over. Low battery charge and faults in the 48-volt charging system come up repeatedly, along with erratic electronics. Dealers try a software update or blame short trips, and one owner says the dealer cleared the charging fault codes without investigating them. One car shows these issues at roughly 13k miles, and a dealer calls it a known issue with no fix yet.
Automatic emergency braking2No crashes
Warnings that Forward Collision Mitigation and other safety systems are "reduced" appear at startup or while driving. Dealers say nothing needs fixing, so owners are left unsure whether the systems are working. A separate complaint concerns the Driving Assistant Professional Package. The owner describes it adjusting speed on its own from posted limits instead of letting the driver choose a speed-sign mode with an offset, and calls this both inconvenient and a possible safety hazard. Neither report describes a crash.
Backup camera2No crashes
While backing out of a garage, the parking assistant hits another vehicle with no warning, does not stop on its own, and seems to accelerate. Rear cross-traffic alert gets criticism too. Owners describe close calls in parking lots, and a dealer explains the alert only triggers when the car is already reversing and another vehicle is very close behind. Owners notice no active braking. These reports point to weak protection when backing up, even with the cameras and sensors in use.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints X7 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Unknown. Outstanding recall on brakes that has no update on resolution. My VIN wasn't part of the initial February 2024 recall, but I purchased my vehicle in March 2024. There was no disclosure about the initial recall when I was purchasing the vehicle. It's only been since October that I was notified that my VIN is now part of this brake recall. Online searches and an email with my dealership have been no help in any updates to resolving this issue.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2024
Manufacturer has failed to address recall in a timely manner. It has been 2 months now with no update on safety recall remedy, and there is still no estimate time frame on when the remedy will be available. Vehicle is unsafe to use as brakes are not performing properly, there is extended stopping distance.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
The car is unsafe to drive due to a brake recall safety issue. The dealer instructed me to leave the vehicle and obtain my loaner car, as they do not provide this service despite the car warranty. Additionally, the electronic system turns on by itself, causing the car to turn on and off, making it unsafe to drive.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2025
After starting car, car went into Power Failure mode, warning to immediately stop car, car continued driving, but eventually engaged parking mode and wouldn’t go back into drive mode until I turned it off and back on again.
