Worth adding to your 2021 checks

  • Run the VIN through a federal recall lookup and confirm any open brake-system recall work is done.

Which X7 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 BMW X7. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
4.4L 8-cylGasAWD17 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybridAWD21 mpg
  • The 2021 BMW X7 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X7 that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 BMW X7, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Front differential failure is the most common report. It shows up between about 42K and 59,000 miles, and dealer repairs run from roughly $9k to $11,500. Some owners say the replacement part is the same design as the original. Transfer case damage causes shuddering and jerking in low-speed turns, plus a loss of power while turning and accelerating. In one case the car lost all drive to the rear wheels. Other reports raise concerns about the oil pump and describe a water pump pulley that broke apart. That threw the accessory belt, cut alternator power and caused a sudden coolant loss.

  • Engine5No crashes

Sudden engine failure appears in several reports, often starting with a "drivetrain malfunction" warning. Symptoms include a low oil pressure warning, knocking or grinding noises, a burning smell and limited power. Failures are reported anywhere from about 32,000 to 87000 miles. Repair estimates reach $15,000, and one quote for a replacement engine was $46,500. In one case the failure followed fan blades breaking off and puncturing the radiator. Another report filed here describes a front differential failure that leaked and burned oil with no dash warning. Losing oil pressure while driving can leave the car disabled.

  • Steering5No crashes

Shuddering, jerking or a skipping feeling at low speed is the main complaint. It is worst when accelerating while turning, pulling away from a stop or climbing a hill. Owners trace it to the transfer case. A fluid service done under a technical bulletin often fails to fix it, and replacement then costs about $9,000–$10,000. Some dealers cannot reproduce the problem. A separate report describes the car jerking into the next lane during a highway merge. Driver assistance errors appeared, the screens went black and power steering had failed weeks earlier.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Fire is the main concern: 2 of the 3 reports involve fire. In one, a burning smell and vapor from the vents turned into flames in the engine bay, with no warning beforehand and a family inside. In the other, smoke filled the cabin and a box on the rear seat caught fire. The third report describes hard starting. The car fails on the first try, shows a "Repeat Start Attempt" message and strains to turn over on the second try.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

The most serious report is a sudden loss of drive from a failed high-pressure fuel pump. The car stopped in traffic and set itself to Park with no warning. It could not be shifted into Neutral to push it clear or load it for towing. Another filing raises concern about the engine oil pump's plastic internal part, which can fracture and drop oil pressure, although that car had not failed. A third report complains about a short fuel gauge reading but names a different manufacturer.

  • Seats3No crashes

Power-folding seats that jam or fail to latch are the common thread. Third-row seats get stuck upright while the motor runs and the latch will not release. Others show a "third row rear seats not fully locked" warning with passengers seated, in one case at about 43,000 miles. A dealer suggested loose compression springs inside the seat. Second-row seats have also folded down and locked in place. Owners worry that an unlatched seatback could collapse in a crash or trap a child.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Sunroof glass breaking while driving shows up here too, with one injury reported. The closed glass panel shattered mostly outward. The other report involves a burned-out LED daytime running light that also damaged its module, so the whole headlight had to be replaced for $8000 at about 28k miles. BMW refused to cover it because the car's warranty had expired by age, although it was still within the mileage limit. A failed headlight can also mean failing a state inspection.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The more serious report is a brake pedal that sticks high and hard after starting the car and shifting into Drive. The car lurches forward as the brakes ease. This lasts 10 to 60 seconds before the pedal returns to normal, with no warning lights. Dealer software updates did not stop it from happening again. The other complaint is grinding when braking that gets louder while turning. The dealer called it pad and rotor stiction and said it was normal operation.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X7 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
very known issue of catastrophic failure to the oil pump, made in Italy with plastic component, used in my vehicle. The part has been updated to metal components on bmw side without any knowledge to the customers with same part number. Faulty xdrive tranfer case, wheel jerks on low speed turning. Currently in class action lawsuit.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Engine
Car had an error message "drivetrain malfunction" car was drivable. Car has 87000 purchased in 2021. Car needs a new engine. Other Car owners having similar issues with the drivetrain malfunction

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Steering
Wheel/Tire makes shudders during a turn at low acceleration or going up a hill leading to uncontrolled acceleration. I have brought the car in for inspection and service and the issue could not be replicated by the techs, however the problem occurs with daily driving. An online search shows that this is a very common problem with the transfer case.

Where the 2021 fits in the X7's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the third model year of the X7's first generation (2019–2023).

BMW updated the X7 for 2023, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2021)

  • Revised front end design with horizontally split headlight units
  • New curved widescreen dashboard
  • Standard MHEV powertrain
