Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical61 crash

Half of these reports are about recall repairs that could not be done. Owners say they got recall notices, but dealers had no parts, and the wait ran on far too long. Of the actual failures, the rear camera blacks out while reversing, which ties to the one crash-related complaint. The fire-related complaint says the car caught fire minutes after a remote start from the phone app. Another report describes a no-start, with the instrument panel shutting off and every warning light on. The dealer blamed a communication fault between transmission software and the main computer.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Sudden loss of drive at highway speed is the most serious pattern here. One report says a coolant warning came first. Then a string of errors declared the car undrivable at 55 mph, and it would not go into park, raising a roll-away risk. Another describes catastrophic engine failure that followed a snapped motor mount and a long dealer repair. A milder complaint is a rumbling from the driveshaft area when speeding up or slowing down around highway speeds.

  • Engine2No crashes

Without warning, the check engine light comes on and the car drops into limp mode. In one report it could not go above 9 mph on a highway, so other traffic had to swerve around it. The other complaint describes leaking fuel injectors, with fuel seeping back into electrical connections, which causes circuit faults and a fire risk. That owner paid out of pocket to replace all four injectors before a dealer did more injector work.

  • Steering2No crashes

Turning the wheel can produce a popping or clicking noise that is worse when the car is cold and makes the drive feel rough. The other complaint is about a parts shortage, not a new failure. The owner received several recall notices covering the rear camera system, suspension, and steering, but parts were unavailable and the repairs stalled. This category has only two complaints, so no wider pattern is visible.

In owners' own words

ElectricalCrash reported
The rear camera is experiencing failure. It blacks out when reversing and I'm unable to see my surroundings. There is an active recall for my vehicle year, make and model, but for some reason my VIN isn't listed as active? The dealership has acknowledged that my vehicles issues are the same as the recall issues. Could you please assist with getting my vin added to the recall list. Thank you

Electrical
On 2/27/22 when I pressed the start button the digital panel tripped off. All the warning messages were on and no response. No start. When the dealer of MB of Pembroke Pines made a diagnostics they Said that the transmission software don’t communicate with the CPU of the system. This is serious safety issue because what if is happened while the car is running in a highway? Or in an intersection? I’m scare.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Transmission
The drivetrain/shaft is causing rumbling in the vehicle when accelerating and decelerating, typically around highway speeds. after more investigation the parts used on the a220 were also used on the gle350 that were recalled for having the same issues however the a220 wasn’t recalled for those issues.
