Which Taycan is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Porsche Taycan. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 225–246 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 225–246 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Unintended shift to Neutral/Park
100–3,500 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Porsche Taycan, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical311 crash
Sudden loss of all drive power is the most serious pattern. An "Electrical System Error" warning appears and the car coasts to a stop, sometimes at freeway speed or on a dark road. The cabin heater also fails, which leaves the windshield unable to defog, and dealers report waiting weeks for parts. Other reports cover a dead 12-volt battery, camera views going blank around 45,000 miles, and spontaneous shifts to Neutral or Park. The 31 filings include a crash, two fires and an electric shock injury from the mobile charger.
Transmission16No crashes
Unintended shifts from Drive to Neutral or Park dominate these filings. They usually happen when the car is stopped or creeping in traffic, and they often start in the first few thousand miles. Some owners also lose power steering at the same moment. A second pattern is sudden loss of acceleration while driving, with a flashing turtle icon on the cluster, including one sharp slowdown at 65 mph. Dealers often cannot reproduce either problem, and cars come back without a repair.
Engine3No crashes
Self-shifting into Neutral, Park or Hold at traffic lights makes up most of these reports, with some owners counting several episodes over a few months on a new car. One filing describes an "Engine control error" message telling the driver to park in a safe place, followed by jerky acceleration after switching drive modes. Turning the car off and back on cleared that fault. There are only 3 complaints here, but they match the shifting problem filed under power train.
Steering3No crashes
Power steering assist cuts out completely, and the driver cannot turn the wheel until the car is restarted. In one report the steering locked during an "Electrical system error" shutdown at about 45 mph in traffic, and the car would not go back into Drive. A separate complaint describes repeated false automatic braking at highway speed, with a warning to take the wheel even though both hands were on it. Unexpected shifts into Park also appear here.
Backup camera3No crashes
Parking sensors and Rear Cross Traffic Alert fail on startup, and in one case the faults would not clear after several restarts. That matters because rear visibility is limited. Owners also describe the backup camera image as unclear and distorted, which makes distances hard to judge. One filing is mainly about a recall repair that could not be done because the part was not available.
Wipers and visibility2No crashes
Cabin heat and windshield defrost stop working, so the windows fog and visibility drops. Dealers trace this to a failed high-voltage electric heater that also heats the coolant used for defrosting, and the fix is replacing it. One owner cites forum reports of repeat heater failures about a year after the first replacement. This is the same heater failure reported under the electrical system category.
Airbags2No crashes
A passenger airbag that does not work, with repeated warnings to contact the dealer, is the core issue here. Both complaints are mostly about a delayed repair. Owners say dealers and Porsche have no part available and no timeline, and one car spent more than three months in service in total. Owners say they do not feel safe carrying a front passenger in the meantime.
Brakes2No crashes
At low speeds the brake pedal feels soft and responds less, so drivers have to press harder or pump the pedal to stop. One driver had to leave the road to avoid a crash. A low brake fluid warning also appears in one report. Dealers first found nothing wrong, and in one case a fluid flush did not help. Replacing the brake booster fixed the problem in one car.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Taycan owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The 240V charger cable has a recall due to overheating and causing fires. I am now having to charge my car with a slower cable. In addition, I have also heard that the battery can have issues with water and leakage causing fires as well. I am concerned with fires by charging the car in my home, and the fact that this car was sold to me, and the charger cable has been known to have issues for years, only now getting a recall letter in Feb 2024.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2024
The heater and defrost are not working which is especially dangerous during cold weather and/or humid conditions. The vehicle is at the dealership service center where they stated there have been a number of similar issues. The dealer has indicated they will inspect and repair. There were no warning lamps/messages prior to failure. To be fair, I never tried the heater before a cold spell this last week.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2024
Multiple times, after coming to a full stop, the car has silently shifted from D to N or P. I often only notice once I want to drive off again, and am unable to. It happened the first time after only around 100 miles, now with over 3500 miles on the car it still happens from time to time.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2022
Came to a stop in traffic and vehicle switched from Drive to Neutral. Power steering also lost. Was able to switch back to drive and proceed without incident. This has occurred twice in the 2547 miles I have driven the car since new.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2022
Engine control error - Park vehicle in a safe space. This error occurred after pressing the accelerator pedal upon switching from Normal to Sport Plus drive mode. When coming to a stop, I tried to accelerate the car but it would jerk. I stopped, put my emergency signal on, turned off and on the car and the error went away.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
On 3 separate occasions while at a stop light the car shifted itself into neutral from drive. It’s very unsettling and unsafe. This is a brand new 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2022

Where the 2022 fits in the Taycan's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the third model year of the Taycan's first generation (2020–2024).
Porsche updated the Taycan for 2024, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2022)
- Improved battery chemistry with increased power density
- Upgraded rear traction motor from Macan BEV
- Increased maximum regenerative braking power from 290 to 400kW
- Increased maximum charging rate from 270 to 320kW
