Which GX is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Lexus GX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4L 6-cyl | 4WD | 17 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GX that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Lexus GX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical4No crashes
The gauge cluster and head-up display go black, sometimes at startup and sometimes while driving, and stay dark for minutes at highway speed. The center screen may also flicker. Other reports describe a no-start with a "Low Steering Power" message, a humming noise, and clicking even with lights and screens working. Failures show up early, around 4,500 to 8,000 miles. Dealers often can't reproduce the blackouts, so no repair is done. In one case, lotion leaking through the dash shelf above the glove box destroyed control modules and disabled the vehicle.
Engine2No crashes
Sudden, total loss of power while driving is the main concern. The car stalls with no prior warning, dashboard messages call for an immediate dealer visit, and the driver has to get out of heavy traffic. In the case reported, the dealer traced the failure to a broken timing belt guide. That let the engine timing slip and damaged the valves and cylinder head, which had to be replaced. A separate complaint reports a rough idle. Only 2 complaints are on file, but a stall in traffic is a serious crash risk.
Brakes2No crashes
The vehicle shakes violently when braking down long, steep grades, enough that the driver doubts it can stop. This started at about 6,000 miles. The dealer called it normal on steep grades and first offered to resurface the rotors before agreeing to replace them. Other complaints describe brakes squealing in reverse in the mornings and sometimes going forward. Those complaints are mostly about a parts shortage. Dealers can order only a few repair kits each week, and owners report waiting 4 to 6 months for parts.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints GX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Brakes squeal when backing up in the mornings and occasionally going forward. Maunufacturer is aware of the problem, but until recently would only allow dealers to order 1 repair kit per week. Now the manufacturer is allowing 4 kits per week to be ordered. This problem appears to affect 2/3s of all vehicles sold. Repair parts are taking 4 to 6 months to get. The manufacturer is not being responsive.

Where the 2024 fits in the GX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2024 is the first model year of the GX's third generation (2024–2024). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Lexus fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (2)
Recall repairs are free at any Lexus dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
25V767000EngineNov 2025
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra, Lexus LX, and 2024 Lexus GX vehicles equipped with a V35A engine. Debris from the manufacturing process may contaminate the engine and cause the main bearings to fail, which can result in an engine stall and loss of drive power.
Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: The remedy is currently under development. Once the repair is available, repairs will be performed free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed December 16, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated April 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB14 and 25TA14. Lexus' numbers for this recall are 25LB07 and 25LA07. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 24V381.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.
