Which ES is it?

  • The 2023 Lexus ES was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A ES that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

  • Brakes21 crash

Sudden acceleration while the brake pedal is pressed at parking-lot speed is the most serious problem here. It appears in 1 of the 2 complaints, and that report involves a crash. The car surged forward while easing into a space, and a "Parking Support Brake Malfunction" warning appeared on the instrument panel. No injuries were reported. The other complaint describes brakes that squeak only when reversing slowly. A dealer called this common on newer models. Neither report gives a mileage.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints ES owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
The ES model and LS, the brakes squeak while ONLY going in reverse at a slow speed. I asked the mechanic at the Lexus dealership and they responded that this was common with the newer models. This is a manufacturer defect. Very embarrassing while backing up.
