Which Focus is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Ford Focus. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L 3-cylGas | FWD | 34 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 31 mpg |
| 2.3L 4-cylGas | AWD | 22 mpg |
| Electric | FWD | 115 mi range |
- The 2018 Ford Focus was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 115 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Ford Focus, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission300No crashes
The automatic transmission shudders, slips, refuses to go into reverse, or loses power and slows abruptly in traffic, sometimes with a transmission overheating message. Dealers often replace clutches, actuators, or the transmission control module. Several owners report repeat clutch replacements that never cure the shudder. Clutch failures cluster between roughly 27,000 and 45,000 miles, and full transmission replacements show up later. A smaller group describes turbo or oil pump drive belt failures that ruin the engine. Sudden power loss on highways and stranding with no warning light are common themes.
Engine2461 crash
Sudden stalling, jerking, overheating, and loss of oil pressure lead to seized engines, often with no warning. The most repeated cause is an oil pump drive belt or its tensioner failing and starving the engine of oil, which ends in a full engine replacement. Coolant loss, cracked head gaskets, worn spark plugs, and turbo failure also appear, and some owners say a replacement engine failed again. One fire report describes an overheating warning, then lost power steering, hard brakes, and flames under the hood. One crash report involves repeated stalling.
Most filings here concern a recall notice, not a new failure. Owners describe waiting months because repair parts are not available, dealer waiting lists, and the repair being done more than once. Reported failures include stalling with an oil pressure light, loss of acceleration, violent vibration at startup, coolant getting into the cylinders, and engine replacement. Some owners say overheating or coolant contamination began after the dealer work. Several cars stalled in the middle of the road, and some engines failed a second time after an earlier replacement.
Fuel system1121 crash
Stalling after refueling is the dominant complaint. The engine sputters, dies, or needs several tries to start after a fill-up, and some cars then stall at lights or in intersections. Mechanics usually blame the canister purge valve, and one owner found the plastic fuel tank warped. Evaporative emission leak codes and a drop in fuel economy recur. One crash involved a car that shut off in a busy intersection, though that owner blamed an oil pump. Many reports fall between about 40,000 and 60,000 miles.
The car fails to restart or idles roughly right after refueling, and some cars stall while idling or driving. Diagnoses center on a stuck-open canister purge valve, which owners say can pull enough vacuum to deform or collapse the fuel tank. Repairs do not always hold. Several owners report the stalling returning after a purge valve replacement, including work done under a recall. Failures span a wide range, from about 25,000 to 147,000 miles. Many owners say the manufacturer provided no assistance.
Steering303 crashes
Power steering assist fails suddenly and leaves the wheel stiff or locked, usually with a Steering Assist Fault message, though some cars lose assist with no warning. Dealers replace the steering gear, rack, or assist module, and one estimate tops $4000. Failures cluster between about 40,000 and 75,000 miles. Three crash reports are filed here, including a car that went into a ditch when the wheel became hard to turn. Some filings in this category actually describe engine seizure, purge valve stalling, or transmission faults.
Electrical27No crashes
Most complaints here describe engine trouble that shows up as electrical symptoms: oil pressure warnings, stalling, sudden power loss, and hard brakes after the engine quits. Some owners say stalling began right after a purge valve recall repair. Others report a transmission control module freezing gears, Sync screens and backup cameras going dark, radios shutting off, and hard starts. One fire report describes a car that smoked, lost power in a driving lane, and burned after blinking engine and oil lights.
Brakes112 crashes
Brake loss here usually follows engine failure. When the oil pump or its belt fails, the engine quits, oil pressure drops, and the brake pedal turns hard or stiff, leaving some drivers to stop with the parking brake. Repairs include a new engine, turbo, and brake vacuum pump. Reported mileages run from about 65,000 to 73,940. Two crash reports appear, including a rental with a pedal that sank to the floor at low speed. One owner reports a dealer blaming brake wear on ocean air.
Airbags86 crashes
Airbags that fail to deploy in serious collisions are the main complaint. Owners describe frontal and side impacts at roughly 25 to 35 mph where no bags fired or only the knee airbag deployed, and one driver airbag that came out but never inflated. Most of these reports involve crashes, and several list injuries, including spinal fractures. Other filings mention an airbag warning light left on after recall work and a knee airbag deploying when bumped.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Focus owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I hit 75,000 miles in my Focus. Got routined maintenance. Having issues with the transmission. While driving the car it skips from 1st to 3rd, it will not reverse, and I have to get it jump started half the time. Haven’t been able to drive my car since 05/2022. Ford acknowledged my recall but the VIN number isn’t the same, so they aren’t willing to help out much. The amount of money it’s going to take to fix this car will not be worth it.

Engine shudders and sometimes stalls out when accelerating from complete stop and from low speed. Shudders also after changing gears or when trying to accelerate quickly like to change lanes. Especially after being driven more than about 50 miles without stopping. Has to be cranked 2 or 3 times after fueling and engine will only stay on if accelerator is pressed almost to the floor. Check engine light comes on and goes off randomly.

at 72000 miles the vehicle stopped running no power no warning lights on indication of any issue. luckily it was on a side road. hade it towed to the ford dealer diagnosed with a broken timing belt and needed a new engine. the quote off $7000.00 to replace the engine with a new long block after paying the lone on the car I replaced the long block myself just last week on 07/20/2026 at a cost off around $5000.00

My car just stalls when gas get below a quater tank of gas and when getting gas car wont start after gas gets in tank needs a couple of tries before it starts without stalling yesterday we were driving we had 31 miles on dash the car died out in middle of road wouldnt start walked to gas station to get gas my car has every problem that there is a recall for same vehicle..
Filed with NHTSA, July 2021
The plastic gas tank was warped by heat and a faulty purge solenoid. The warped gas tank is a known issue for the 2018 Ford Focus and other versions of the car are covered by the recall, but my VIN apparently was not despite experiencing the same issue at less than 50,000 miles. The warped gas tank caused a dangerous car shutoff in traffic.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2026
My steering wheel got jammed in the middle of the road. Kt was just working fine and got stuck while I was driving. The ford dealer inspected the car and identified that my steering rack got cracked after the diagnosis. My car is driven just 40,000 miles
Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
The power steering went out when I was 50 miles from home. It was very difficult to steer and presented a safety hazard since the handling was compromised and it was nearly impossible to steer the car.
