Reported on other Voyager years with the same design

These years share the 2020's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2020 checks

  • Accelerate hard up a highway on-ramp and confirm power stays steady with no dash warning lights or drop into neutral.
  • Make several stops and confirm auto start/stop restarts the engine cleanly with no start/stop warning light.
  • Ask for battery records and check whether the main or auxiliary battery was replaced more than once.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chrysler Voyager, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine4No crashes

Coolant and oil escape where they should not. One report describes coolant leaking into a cylinder from a blown head gasket at 62,000 miles. Another describes the oil filter housing and oil cooler failing, pumping out oil and antifreeze and shutting the van down on a highway. Other complaints describe the engine running rough, nearly stalling, and struggling to accelerate with the check engine and stop/start warnings lit, returning even after the dealer replaced the coils. One engine quit entirely and was found corroded. Stalling at speed is the main safety risk.

  • Steering2No crashes

Sticking or brief locking of the wheel shows up on slow right turns and gradual right curves, and the driver has to tug left to bring it back to center. A more serious report describes steering cutting out mid-turn as all the warning lights came on, the wipers switched on, and the van went dead and needed a flatbed tow. That fault is traced to CAN bus wiring at a connector above the glove box, after weeks at the dealer without a fix. Both problems carry a loss-of-control risk.

Where the 2020 fits in the Voyager's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Voyager's sixth generation (2020–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chrysler fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Chrysler updated the Voyager for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • Fleet-only sales
  • Standard heated front seats
  • Uconnect 5 system

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Chrysler dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V793000AirbagsOct 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Pacifica and 2020-2021, 2023 Voyager vehicles. An improperly secured connector for the side curtain air bags may prevent the air bags from deploying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 214, "Side Impact Protection" and 226, "Ejection Mitigation.".

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will secure the connector, free of charge. All vehicles have been remedied. Owner notification letters were mailed October 22, 2024. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is A8B.
