Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Ford Transit Connect Wagon, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission101 crash

Transmission failure dominates. Reports describe rough or harsh shifts, jerking when slowing, shudder and hesitation going uphill, gears changing at the wrong rpm, and a van that won't move in drive or reverse. Several reports blame the torque converter clutch. Most failures land between about 80,000 and 95,000 miles, often just after the warranty ends, and dealers usually call for a full replacement. A few fail much earlier, around 17,000 miles. The one crash-related report describes the van creeping forward in reverse and stalling at stops. Others describe summer overheating warnings that briefly cut power.

  • Brakes3No crashes

A front wheel locks up or a front caliper seizes. Light braking at highway speed brings heavy vibration, and one wheel ends up too hot to touch. Shops often replace the brake line or caliper first, but the fault comes back until the ABS module is replaced. One case happened under 30,000 miles, and in at least one case no warning light came on. A separate report describes a leaking front brake hose that let the pedal sink and made stops longer. Both problems raise the risk of losing control while braking.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

Water leaks in at the windshield. Owners find moisture on the passenger side or condensation dripping from the top of the glass. Reports fall between 19,000 and 31,122 miles. The leak is hard to trace, and several shops miss it before anyone checks the windshield. Most of these complaints are about getting the leak fixed. Owners link it to a recall campaign, but dealers either say the VIN isn't covered or can't find a mechanic to do the work, and the manufacturer offers no more help.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

A "Pre-Collision Assist Not Available" warning appears at low speed, and then the van hesitates or won't accelerate properly. Drivers describe a clunk, the van shaking back and forth, erratic rpm, and the transmission switching back and forth between gears. Pulling over and restarting the engine clears the fault for a while, but it comes back. Losing acceleration in traffic is a real hazard. The same warning, paired with hesitation, also shows up in power train complaints at about 15,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Transit Connect Wagon owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Transmission failed with only 17,000 miles (mostly highway) on the car. The car did not move forward from a parked location. It only moved in reverse. It had to be towed to the nearest dealership and when they examined it, it did not move in reverse either. Even though it is under warranty, the dealers are taking a long time to repair the car.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2022

Transmission
Powertrain fault Transmission torque converter clutch is not operating as expected. Transmission not shifting properly. Fixed many times and still same issue, now it needs new transmission.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Brakes
The left front wheel locked up. The dealership first replaced the brake line. When that didn’t repair the problem they said they’d need to replace the ABS Module. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles. Online it appears that ABS Module failure is a common problem in Ford vehicles with the 2.0 four cylinder engine dating back to 2010.

Recalls to confirm (8)

Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V442000Backup cameraJun 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.

Risk: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.

  2. 25V196000TransmissionMar 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Transit Connect vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 20V-636. The powertrain control module (PCM) software has fail-safe temperature threshold values higher than intended for the engine. This may delay engine cooling and result in engine overheating.

Risk: An engine that overheats increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 21, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S32.

  3. 22V413000TransmissionJun 2022

Risk: A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  4. 22V192000Wipers and visibilityMar 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016 and 2020 Transit Connect vehicles. The front windshield may have been manufactured with inadequate adhesion to the vehicle body structure.

Risk: During a crash, the windshield may detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the windshield and, if necessary, remove and reinstall the windshield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 11, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S20.

Risk: A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, causing the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the underhood shifter cable bushing, and add a protective cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 29, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S24.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection.".

Risk: Air bag modules missing the first-stage booster propellant will not deploy as intended in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag module on either the driver or passenger side, free of charge. This recall began February 18, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20C26.

The powertrain control module (PCM) software has fail-safe temperature threshold values higher than intended for the engine. This may delay the fail-safe cooling strategy in the event of coolant loss and result in engine overheating.

Risk: If the engine overheats, it can result in engine damage and increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S60.
