Reported on other Voyager years with the same design

These years share the 2021's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2021 checks

  • Check the coolant reservoir level and ask the seller about any unexplained coolant loss or head gasket work.
  • Inspect around the oil filter housing and oil cooler for oil or antifreeze leaks.
  • Accelerate firmly on the test drive and watch for rough running, near-stalling, or check engine and stop/start warnings.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Voyager that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Chrysler Voyager, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Loss of acceleration is the most serious problem in these reports. The van will not accelerate at highway speed after hard acceleration, and the automatic start/stop system fails. In another case the van shifts into park and shuts off when pulling away from a stop sign, with the start/stop warning light on, at 241 miles. Main and auxiliary batteries reportedly fail again within a year of replacement. Other complaints cite a backup camera that stays dead for months, wired Apple CarPlay that will not connect, and middle-row headrests that do not lock upright after stowing.

  • Steering3No crashes

The wheel suddenly turns heavy or sticks, and both create a loss-of-control risk. In one report, power assist drops out on the highway with no warning, leaving the wheel almost impossible to turn and the van needing a tow. Others describe the wheel sticking each time the driver exits a turn, which invites overcorrection, plus a vague spot on center that makes the van wander side to side. No warning lights or noises come first. A mechanic suspects the tie rods or rack and pinion, and one dealer cures the problem by replacing steering components.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Sudden loss of power at freeway speed is the main danger. The dash lights up with warnings, the gas pedal stops responding, and the transmission drops into neutral while the engine keeps running. The van then shifts into park once stopped, and it drives normally after sitting for about twenty minutes. The problem returns several times. A separate complaint describes rough idle and stalling that move on to misfires on cylinder 3, overheating, and coolant loss pointing to head gasket failure. New batteries and spark plugs do not fix it. One independent mechanic cannot get Chrysler's technical information.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Voyager owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
After going through rapid acceleration, van will experience electrical issue which does not allow for acceleration and triggers auto stop to fail. The electrical issue prevents the van from accelerating while in motion on a highway. This issue has persisted every year, despite replacing both the main and auxiliary batteries. Both batteries have failed within a year and recently after a week of being replaced.

Where the 2021 fits in the Voyager's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the second model year of the Voyager's sixth generation (2020–2023).

Chrysler updated the Voyager for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)

  • Fleet-only sales
  • Standard heated front seats
  • Uconnect 5 system
