Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes7No crashes

Rear pads and rotors wear out early, often around 13,000 to 15,000 miles, even on cars driven mostly on the highway. Owners notice loud noise or grinding from the rear when stopping and pay out of pocket for new pads and rotors. In at least one case, new rear pads wore down to 2mm within months when the rotors were not replaced. On manual-transmission cars, Hill Start Assist holds the brakes too long on slight grades. The engine stalls or dies, which is dangerous when pulling away in traffic.

  • Engine5No crashes

Misfires across multiple cylinders turn on the check engine light, usually at cold start while the car sits still. Reports center on the GLI with the 6-speed manual. The fault shows up very early, between about 300 and 4,000 miles. Dealers often blame bad fuel or spark plugs, clear the codes, and the light returns soon after. In one case the fault came back after a software update. In another, a buyback did not solve it because the replacement car developed the same misfire.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Hill assist engages while the car climbs an incline and stays engaged on the way back down. The only way to release it is to stop and restart the car. No warning light comes on. The fault starts out intermittent and becomes a recurring problem, and owners connect it to added rear brake wear and a manual transmission slipping out of gear. One report from a rental car describes unintended acceleration and braking, but most of its details are redacted.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Jetta owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
Vehicle is brand new currently has 13,000 miles, only highway driving, purchased car new in April 2024. Rear brakes wore down prematurely. Needed to replace rear brakes and rotors.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Brakes
I just got this 2024 Jetta Sport 6 speed manual and tried getting up the drive that's slightly inclined and the brake assist would not disengage or the fuel was cut after it didn't progress then dies. It is possible to power through the brake assist but it will cause premature wear on the clutch, flywheel as well as the rear E brake with all this wireless tech on the brakes, throttle can't figure it out so take it back.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Engine
I have gotten a multiple cylinder misfire since 800 miles and VW dealerships haven't been able to figure out why at first they said bad fuel then bad plugs and they have tried to treat both and it has not been fixed they will clear the light and it comes back almost immediately

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Engine
I keep getting a cylinder 1 and 4 misfire on a 6MT on cold start. I previously had another 2024 jetta gli and it had the same exact problem as this one. the dealer confirmed the problem and bought the car back and now it is happening on the new car.
