Which Impreza is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Subaru Impreza. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Impreza that averages well under the EPA 32 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Subaru Impreza, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights621 crash

Low beams light too little of the road at night, so drivers struggle to see road edges, worn lane markings in rain, and the ground near the front corners during turns. Most filings come from owners waiting on a headlight recall repair, with dealers confirming the replacement part is not available, in some cases nearly two years after the notice. A few owners say a dealer tied their dim lights to that open recall. One crash involved hitting a curb during a night turn, and others describe near misses.

  • Wipers and visibility58No crashes

Windshields crack with no clear impact, sometimes with a loud pop while driving and sometimes while parked in a driveway or garage. Some owners hear creaking before the glass splits. Small pebbles also leave long cracks that keep spreading, especially in sun and heat, and several owners are on their second or third windshield. Cracks show up early, with reports near 3,000 miles. A second pattern is the cowl trim at the base of the windshield lifting or buckling, which returns after warranty replacement and can let water reach the engine bay.

Windshields crack, either from small rocks at normal speeds or with no impact at all, including overnight while parked and right after pulling away from a light. Cracks often spread a foot or two across the glass, sometimes the day after a strike. One owner needed another windshield a month after a replacement. Reported mileages range from about 14,000 to 52,000, so the problem is not limited to new cars.

  • Electrical15No crashes

Batteries go dead after the car sits for a day or a few days, and some owners have replaced three or four. Dealers often find no fault, call the drain within spec, or blame too little driving, so some owners now rely on a battery tender. Rodents chewing engine-bay wiring is another repeat complaint, and owners say warranty does not cover it. Less common reports include a head unit that reboots nonstop, flickering headlights and gauges, and a knee bumping the key and shutting off the engine in traffic.

  • Engine5No crashes

One car caught fire in the engine compartment while parked about 12 hours and was a total loss, after its first service near 5,000 miles. Other reports describe weak power and odd shifting traced to carbon buildup on the heads, which required taking the engine apart and machining the heads. Owners also report pinging on fuel below 91 octane and the throttle not responding at low speed in parking lots, with one near collision. A knee hitting the key can shut off the engine at highway speed.

  • Brakes51 crash

Rubber brake hoses swell or bubble between the caliper and the metal lines, sometimes at all four wheels, and one shop advised not driving the car until they were replaced. One crash report describes the brake pedal locking rigid in stop-and-go highway traffic, leading to a low-speed impact with a truck. Other owners report constant squealing that continues after new pads and rotors, and a rear caliper that does not fully engage, along with vibration and noise.

  • Steering5No crashes

The car wanders and darts within its lane at 50 to 70 mph, even on straight, smooth roads with no wind, and drivers must keep making small corrections. The wheel may not return to center after a turn. Alignments and new tires have not fixed it, and one dealer found the same behavior on new cars from the lot. Owners also describe a floating feel at highway speed and a scraping noise over bumps, which one dealer traced to the shocks and steering rack at 600 miles.

  • Airbags43 crashes

Airbags failed to deploy in three crashes that together injured five people. The crashes include a side impact, a rear-end collision into an SUV at about 35 mph, and a front-quarter impact. Both of the last two cars were totaled, and injuries include a broken foot and a concussion. One owner believes the sensors sit too low to register a hit into a taller vehicle. One more filing describes the SRS warning light staying on in a car with only 150 miles.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Only two complaints fall here, but one involves a crash. The car surged forward at full throttle while creeping into a parking space and hit a parked vehicle, with the driver saying the accelerator was not pressed. The other describes shaking and stumbling at 50 to 60 mph, as if the engine is starved for fuel, and the car will not go faster than 60.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Impreza owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
I have received two letters over the past six months, telling me that my 2019 Subaru Impreza has been recalled for faulty headlamps. When I contact my local Subaru dealer, SC, I have three times now been told that the part for the required repair is "not available." I feel as if I am driving a vehicle that is dangerous to me and to others. Can you tell me when the required parts will be available for the needed repair?

Exterior lights
The front headlights have been on recall for some time now. When I last contacted the dealership they said they wouldn't fulfill the repair and also said that they would no longer be making parts for the car and may not ever fix the headlights but I waited to see if that wasn't the case. You can check the date the recall was first made officially compared to today to see the timeline.

Wipers and visibility
The windshield on this vehicle is defective. Over time for no reason scratches have appeared. Additionally now chips have occurred for no apparent reason. I have gently used an ice scraper as needed after defrosting the windshield enough to make it practical, however, my scraper is in excellent condition and was not misused. This should not cause a windshield to break down. There are also waves in the windshield that make for an uneven appearance in spots.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2022

Electrical
I believe my car having some issues with fuel system, gasoline delivery, cooling down and exhaust system, electrical system:ignition. This vehicle only has 15,606 miles on it and should not be giving me this kind of problem.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2022

Electrical
Electrical issue affecting the headlights, radio, clock, gauges. Headlights constantly flicker/dimming, also causes the bulbs to burn out rapidly. Radio constantly losing power Clock/miles left in tank display resets occasionally The the speedometer and tachometer display loses power dropping all the needles to 0 for a second before popping back. These issues got worse after the last recall was done

Filed with NHTSA, May 2022

Engine
Low speed throttle application vehicle fails to respond. Does not happen all the time. A near collision almost happened while making a left hand turn with oncoming traffic. Has been happening repeatedly, usually within a parking lot.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Engine
While driving on highway, knee contacted key causing the ignition to turn off engine. Car began to decelerate. While care was still in drive, turned ignition switch on and engine returned.

Where the 2019 fits in the Impreza's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the third model year of the Impreza's fifth generation (2017–2023).

Subaru updated the Impreza for 2020, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2020 (not on a 2019)

Recalls to confirm (5)

Recall repairs are free at any Subaru dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
