Which Gladiator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Jeep Gladiator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.6L 6-cylGas4WD19 mpg
3.0L 6-cylDiesel4WD24 mpg
  • The 2023 Jeep Gladiator was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Gladiator that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Jeep Gladiator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical11No crashes

Sudden loss of power is the main pattern. Trucks shut off while moving, sometimes at highway speed, and then refuse to restart. Others go completely dead in the driveway, with no lights and no crank, and dealers often find nothing wrong. Repeated battery drain comes up too, along with complaints about the dual-battery setup. Some owners report the whole instrument panel going black while driving. Failures cluster around 8,000 to 10,000 miles. One parked truck caught fire in the engine compartment hours after shutdown and destroyed a garage. The cause was not determined.

  • Steering7No crashes

Violent front-end shaking at highway speed is the dominant complaint. It starts after a bump or rough patch, keeps going through lane changes, and stops only when the driver slows way down. Owners describe nearly losing control in traffic. It shows up on trucks with only a few thousand miles. Dealers often blame alignment or tires, and an aftermarket stabilizer replacement did not keep it from coming back. A smaller group reports power steering assist warnings, loss of power steering, and stalls that leave the shifter stuck in park.

  • Fuel system6No crashes

Two problems dominate. First, the fuel pump fails and the engine cuts out in traffic with no warning, on trucks with 22,000 miles or fewer. Owners describe near misses with surrounding cars, and one warranty repair took almost 2 months. Second, gas sprays back out of the filler neck at nearly every fill-up and runs down the fender and onto the ground. Lowering the pump speed does not help. One owner traced it to an obstruction that keeps the nozzle from seating fully.

  • Suspension5No crashes

Most of these complaints describe the same highway wobble reported under steering. Hitting a bridge joint, pothole, or uneven pavement at interstate speed sets off heavy shaking in the front wheels and steering wheel, and it continues until the driver slows down sharply. Reports start very early, between 610 and 8,100 miles, on trucks that have not been off-road. Owners say dealers did nothing to fix it. One unrelated complaint involves a used truck sold with hidden frame damage.

  • Transmission5No crashes

Limp mode and sudden power loss are the drivability complaints. In one case the truck showed a hot-clutch warning in four-wheel drive, then a service-transmission message. Another truck downshifted on a steep interstate grade and lost power with the check engine light on. The rest of the filings are about a recall repair that dealers could not finish because parts were on backorder. Owners say both the dealer and the manufacturer confirmed the parts were not available.

  • Brakes3No crashes

A hissing sound near the steering area at first startup comes with a soft brake pedal that has to be pumped. In that condition the truck can creep forward or backward with the brake pressed. A dealer replaced the vacuum pump at 6,162 miles, but the problem came back within weeks. Separate reports describe a rear caliper bolt falling out at 5,700 miles, which damaged the wheel. Another describes a parking brake that came loose on a manual-transmission truck.

Electrical
2023 Jeep Gladiator with 8000 miles shut off while driving down the highway at approximately 40 Mph. Service Electronic Throttle Control light illuminated. Coasted to a stop and put the vehicle in park. Vehicle wouldn’t restart. Vehicle is currently at the dealership awaiting service.

Electrical
This Jeep gladiator has not started on several occasions. And is now stuck in our driveway not turning over the engine. This apparently is a known problem and has stranded my family. Has Also stopped all the electrical with the engine driving down the road when my husband was returning from work, this is a safety issue please respond.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Steering
Several times while driving on the interstate highway, my gladiator starts shaking violently! It is just at normal highway speeds. It is not like going too fast or anything. It seems like if it hits some rough spot in the road that it begins shaking and won't stop. If I change lanes, it keeps going with the shaking. Not until I slow way down will it stop shaking. This vehicle has less than 5000 miles on it. It is scary and unsafe.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Steering
At 4k miles hit small bump, jeep vibrated violently this has happened on multiple occasions at highway speeds & was very dangerous. Dealer has vehicle in shop for over 24 hours blame’s tire alignment, they had just rotated tires.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Fuel system
Cut off on me while driving. Loss power in middle of street almost cause me to hit another vehicle. Took it to repair under warranty they took almost 2 months to repair. Did some research and apparently this is a common issue on these trucks ans it is still not a recall about it. Dealership replaced same fuel injection pump it had. So basically it will happen again sometime soon. My vehicle only has 17k miles.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Fuel system
Gas overflows when filling at gas station It has happened over 5 times. Nozzle is on the lowest setting Have been to the dealership twice to have it inspected I have video of it happening twice. The tank is usually 1/4 tank when filling. Safety hazard.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Suspension
At 8100 miles whenever driving on interstate and hit an uneven patch of road, such as a bridge entry, exit, the wheels start vibrating heavily and requires decreasing speed to get under control. This vibration gets out of hand and creates an out of control feeling that requires sudden deceleration and this gets dangerous with traffic behind traveling at interstate speeds.
